University Lutheran Church s1

WELCOME TO UNIVERSITY LUTHERAN CHURCH during this Easter season when we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and the new life that we have been given by the power of the Holy Spirit who calls and gathers us together into community and sends us forth into the world as the presence of God’s love, justice, and peace. In our worship service today, we will be guided by the theme of justice and peace as we welcome Kaitlin Winter-Eulberg, the Organizing Intern for Faith Action Network (FAN), as our guest preacher.

WE WELCOME EVERYONE TO HOLY COMMUNION to receive God’s gift of forgiveness and the powerful freedom of a new life in Christ. Please come down the center aisle, proceed to the communion rail, and kneel or stand at the first open space. Hold out your hand to receive the bread. Gluten-free wafers are available. Please indicate your desire at the time you are offered the bread. You may drink either from an individual glass, which will be served first, or from the chalice. The individual glasses in the center of the tray contain grape juice. An acolyte will pass by to pick up your individual glass. In the spirit of continuous communion, please return to your seat via the side aisles after you have drunk from the glass or chalice. After everyone has been served at the communion rail, the ministers will serve anyone in the pew that is unable to come forward. Please indicate your desire in this regard to the usher. Children who commune at their home congregation are welcome to receive the elements. Please hold out your hand to let the minister know that you wish to receive communion. Parents who desire their children not to receive communion may bring them up to receive a blessing.

PLEASE INDICATE YOUR ATTENDANCE at worship today and your participation at Holy Communion by completing the enclosed Worship Registration form and placing it in the offering plate. Please join us for fellowship and refreshments in the lounge after the service. We will be honoring Doris Helle today as she celebrates her 100th birthday on this very day.

THERE ARE CHILDREN’S BAG with bulletins and books available in the lounge and the narthex. They are hanging on the wall.

LARGE-PRINT BULLETINS are available for your use during the worship service. You may pick one up in the lounge.

CHILD CARE is available in the Nursery for children of any age. Ask the usher for directions.

OUR PRAYERS are for our homebound, and for those in need of healing in body, mind or spirit. We also pray for the men and women of SHARE/WHEEL during this time that they are without shelter.

TEXTS FOR NEXT SUNDAY: Acts 11:1-18; Revelation 21:1-6; John 13:31-35.

2 Fourth Sunday of Easter April 17, 2016

Prelude “Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service” Al Roberts

Welcome & Announcements Service of Confession & Absolution

Confession P: Our gracious God has promised to save us from the throes of death and gather us together in a single peace where no one will perish by forgiving us and remembering our sins no more. As we dwell in this promise, we confess our sins and await God’s gift of forgiveness. (Silent Confession)

P: God of justice and peace, All: We confess to you that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our entire being. We have not loved our neighbors with the love that you have revealed to all humankind. People continue to live without proper shelter. Hunger affects over a quarter of the citizens in this country, not to mention the poverty that is rampant throughout the world. We continue to wage war and delude ourselves into thinking that we are living in a time of peace. The sun continues to bake the earth, and many indigenous people are watching their land become arid, their homes become submerged in water, and their food supply disappear due to the acidification of the seas. Forgive us God for our part in this travesty and renew in us a right spirit of justice and peace.

Absolution P: In the imagery of being guided to springs of living water and having every tear in our eyes wiped away, we receive the promise of God’s forgiveness and the freedom to live in the hope of the resurrection as God continues to make all things new in the way that we have love for one another and for the entire planet. C: Amen.

(Please stand as you are able) Processional Hymn “Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service” Green Hymnal #423

(Face the cross as it is carried forward)

3 Greeting P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you.

Hymn of Praise “Light Dawns on a Weary World”

4 Prayer of the Day A: Let us pray together: C: God of justice and peace, your desire for peace is a great inspiration for us to make peace a priority in our lives. Grant us your Spirit so that we will refrain from all ungodliness, provide food for those who are hungry, and address the needs of those who are impoverished. Help us to refrain from all forms of violence and bring an end to the wars that we wage for the sake of peace in this world. We pray in the name of our Prince of Peace. Amen.

(Please be seated) First Lesson Acts 9:36-42 Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, "Please come to us without delay." So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, "Tabitha, get up." Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner. L: Holy Wisdom. Holy Word. C: Thanks be to God.

Psalm Hymn “O Day of Peace”

5 Second Lesson Revelation 7:9-17 After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen." Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

L: Holy Wisdom. Holy Word. C: Thanks be to God.

(Please stand) Gospel Acclamation

6 Gospel John 10:22-30 At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Judeans gathered around him and said to him, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly." Jesus answered, "I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in God's name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What God has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of God's hand. God and I are one."

P: The Gospel of the risen Christ. C: Thanks be to God.

Offering/Musical Offering “Sing the Song of Praise” Eugene Butler

Sin, O sing the song of praise! Let joyful noise resound. Rejoice, our God has made our days Resplendent, glory-crowned.

Sing your thanks with song and hymn, The harp and trumpet employ; Our praise to God should not grow dim, We sing our praise with joy.

Our God created all the deeps, The mountain reaches, too, 7 And with a shepherd’s care, God keeps; All promises are true.

Give thanks to God and sing the song Or praise to glorify. Join with song the praising throng, Give thanks to God on high

(Please stand) Offertory Hymn “God of Grace and God of Glory” Green Hymnal #415 (verses 1 & 2)

Offertory Prayer A: Let us pray together: C: God of righteousness, you have provided us with what we need to be sustained in this life. In response to your faithfulness and generosity, we offer to you these fruits of our labor for the ministries of this congregation, for justice in our community, and for peace throughout the world. Bless this bread and fruit of the vine that all who partake of this holy meal will be embolden in their faith to strive for justice and peace in all the earth. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Eucharistic Prayer P: Holy God, our Maker, Redeemer, and Healer, in the harmonious world of your creation, you declare everything to be good and well in your praise. When evil entered the world, you offered to us your forgiveness, and sent Jesus into the world to reveal to us your way of peace.

In the night in which he was betrayed, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering Jesus’ acts of healing, his life that was taken from him, and his victory over death, we await that day when all the peoples of the earth will come together with hearts yearning for justice and peace.

Send your Spirit upon us and this meal through which we receive the faith and courage to obey your commandments and follow in the way of Jesus, through whom all glory and honor are yours, both now and forever. 8 C: Amen.

Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

THE SPECIAL OFFERING FOR APRIL IS EARTH MINITRY. Earth Ministry has been the statewide leader in engaging the religious community in environmental stewardship and advocacy. In October of 2004 University Lutheran Church became a Greening Congregation with Earth Ministry. This program offers a partnership with Earth Ministry and a flexible strategy for engaging our congregation in creation-care efforts. Earth Ministry is also a advocacy leader on issues that affect your environment such as climate change, toxics and children’s health, coal export and much more. If you would like to contribute to Earth Ministry, you may do so by using a special offering envelope in the pew, making your check out to ULC, earmarking it for Earth Ministry, and putting your gift in the offering plate, or bringing it to the church office. Thank you for your generous offering.

AT THE ADULT FORUM TODAY, Kaitlin Winter-Eulberg, the Organizing Intern for Faith Action Network (FAN), will review the results of the most recent legislative session in Olympia and present what members of Advocating Congregations can be doing during the “off-season” to keep the legislative priorities of FAN in the hearts and minds of our legislators.

THE FELLOWSHIP GROUPS will continue to meet for one more week. Even if you did not originally sign up for a particular group, you are still welcome to join in the conversation: Monday, 7:30 p.m. at Church; Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. at Gienapp’s (8003 Sand Point Way NE B-35); and Thursday, 10:00 a.m. at Church. Please let Pastor Ron know if you plan to attend.

THE ULC ANNUAL MEETING will be held on Sunday, April 24, at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary. Along with the election of new Council members and representatives to some of our partner organizations, we will be dealing with proposed amendments to the ULC Constitution and By-laws, getting an update on our dialogue with University Temple, and hearing about plans for our 100th anniversary. Everyone is urged to attend and participate in this important meeting.

THE BEER THAT SEVERAL FOLKS from church brewed back in October has now been bottled and is ready for sampling! At 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, members of the church are invited to the Lachata-Oakley house (10050 45th Ave NE) to try out the brew (based on Martin Luther’s recipe) and make some sausages to go with it. If you are interested in attending, let us know how many to plan for by signing up on the Worship Registration form.

15 MEMBERS OF ULC WILL GATHER FOR A SPRING POTLUCK on Saturday, April 30 at 6:00 p.m. to share in a delicious communal meal and celebrate the beginning of May. Come and join in the conversation about all that is happening around the church and in your daily lives as we continue to share in the new life of this Easter season. Please bring a main dish, salad, or dessert to share. Also remember to bring your own table setting. If you plan to attend, please sign up on the Worship Registration form.

A NEW CHURCH DIRECTORY will be printed in late April. If you would like to update your picture in the directory, please send it to Mari in the church office by April 10. You could take a great picture on this Easter morning! If you have any questions, please call the church office.

LOIS MOE SPRING CARDS will be available for purchase in the lounge after the worship service. There are new spring cards so stop by and see them. If you have any questions, please see Joan Overland.

ON PENTECOST SUNDAY (May 15), we have invited the members of University Temple to worship and share a meal with us. Our worship service will begin at 10:00 a.m. You may come for fellowship and conversation prior to the service at 9:30 a.m. We will be gathering for a potluck and conversation following our worship service (@11:15 a.m.) downstairs in the Fellowship Hall. It would be great if members of ULC would bring main dishes. We will ask members of U Temple to bring salads and desserts. We need people to help with set up, coordination of the meal, and clean up. Please sign up on the Worship Registration form if you can help in any of these capacities. Also, sign up if you plan to attend the potluck.

AN EARTH DAY CLEAN UP work party will gather at Ravenna Park on Saturday, April 23 at 10:00 a.m. in the parking lot off 20th Avenue NE, just before the 20th Street Bridge. Bring your gloves, pruners, and food to join an ecumenical gathering of our brothers and sisters in Christ for a morning of brush clearing fun.
