Joy Nozomi Kogawa (nee Nakayama) was born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1935 to Japanese Canadian parents, Gordon Goichi Nakayama and Lois Masui Nakayama . Gordon G . Nakayama was a Japanese Anglican clergyman (the Nakayama-sensei in Joy' s novel Obasan) and had a significant role in the Japanese Canadian community before , during and after World War II . Lois was a kindergarten teacher and singer, and Joy' s brother Timothy is a clergyman, who worked in Alberta and Seattle, Washington, and is no w working in Okinawa, Japan. Joy and her family were evacuated from Vancouver along with thousands of other Japanese Canadians and moved to Slocan City, in interior British Columbia in 1942, where she had the primary education. The family then moved to Coaldale, Alberta in 1945 . She received a temporary license to teach from the Calgary branch of the University of Alberta in 1954 after attending a one year temporary license course in education, and taugh t elementary school in Coaldale. She studied theology at the University of Toronto and musi c at Royal Conservatory in Toronto in 1956 . She then moved back to Vancouver in 1957 , where she taught elementary school for one year . She attended the University of Saskatchewan in 1967 taking courses in English, philosophy and psychology. From December 1973 through 1975, she worked for Pierre Trudeau in the Correspondenc e Division of the Prime Minister's Office .

Canadian nikkei history began with their labelling as “yellow peril”, followed by their internment during the Second World War, their dispersal after the Second World War, their award of Redress in 1988, and finally their place as a “model minority” in modern multicultural Canada. These main historical milestones have been reflected in various commemorative institutions and spaces such as Powell Street and Nikkei Place which function not just in a practical sense for gathering the Canadian nikkei together but also in an ideological sense to help shape their cultural identities extending transnationally across the Asia Pacific region. Introduction The ‘nikkei’ are people of Japanese descent living outside Japan and no longer Japanese citizens. Canadian nikkei can therefore be defined as Canadians of Japanese descent. Some argue, such as the Kaigai Nikkeijin Kyōkai (Association of Nikkei & Japanese Abroad), that the term nikkei includes all Japanese living outside of Japan even if they hold Japanese citizenship (Hamano 2008: 5). Canadian nikkei are also known as “Japanese(-)Canadians” (with or without the hyphen), although this label has been criticized by some for essentializing both sides of the hyphen and thus not accurately reflecting their identity (Mahtani 2002).

    Rachelle Kanefsky Debunking a Postmodern Conception of History: A Defence of Humanist Values in the Novels of Joy Kogawa To be without history is to be unlived crystal, unused flesh; is to live the life of the unborn. JOY KOGAWA Itsuka 280 Joy Kogawa's two novels, Obasan (1981) and Itsuka (1992), are the first fictional works to explore the Japanese-Canadian peo- ple's experience of internment during World War II and their subsequent struggle for redress (Rose 218; Willis 239). Kogawa's works are worthy of close examination not only because they are the sole fictive narrativizations of important events in Canadian history, but also because they explore the process and reception of history writing. Current theoretical discussions of the relationship between historiogra- phy and fiction are informed by antiessentialist notions about the impossi- bility of reliable representation. Advancing the poststructuralist belief in the essentially unstable nature of signification, postmodern critics who enjoy popularity at present argue that language cannot reflect empirical reality. History is not, therefore, an accurate record of past events but is, like fic- tion, a subjective construct.' Reflecting a relativistic understanding of history, Naomi Nakane, the narrator of both Obasan and Itsuka, asserts that the "truth" of the Japanese Canadians' evacuation is "murky, shadowy and grey" {Obasan 32), and she assumes that belief-affirming modes of expression are ineffectual: "are you thinking that through ... speech-making and story-telling ... we can extricate ourselves from our foolish ways? Is there evidence for optimism?" {Obasan 199). This historical scepticism, however, is the very cause of Naomi's social and political paralysis.

A obra Obasan de Joy Kogawa apresenta uma situação na qual os imigrantes são postos em uma situação que cria conflito. O enfrenta- mento direto entre os imigrantes canadenses e os canadenses nativos em uma colocação desigual, desequilibrada, uma situação política específica, lembra a relação de “victim/ victimizer” discutida por Homi Bhabha e o que ele chama “a ambivalência na relação” no contexto do discurso pós-colonial. O potencial de resistência e subversão, nesta tensão, que emerge, é de particular relevância para este trabalho. O trabalho destaca a diferença entre os Issei – residentes canadenses nascidos ou criados no Japão – e os Nissei – as pessoas do origem japonesa nascidas e criadas no Canadá para mostrar como isto os leva a adotar medidas diferentes. O argumento é construído em torno do papel da cultura que explica como eles reagem a esta situação específica, o protesto silencioso de uma tia e a resistência aberta e direta à opressão ou injustiça assumida por outra tia. Wood ABSTRACT This paper argues that a shared reluctance to confront the causes and consequences of historical injustices endured by ethno-cultural minorities has hampered efforts by educators and activ- ists in British Columbia to inform the public about Japanese Canadian internment during World War II. This reluctance was felt keenly by internment survivors, whose sense of trust in the wider civic community has not yet been re-established. Meanwhile, a desire to “turn the page” on past wrongs — for fear that drawing attention to such episodes generates inter-ethnic tension rather than promotes unity amongst Canada’s multicultural populace — has hindered federal and provincial involvement in educational activities related to WWII internment. Yet as this study suggests, refusal to participate in collective renegotiations of public memory about historical injustices does little to repair the relationship between the wronged group and wider public, or to prevent similar injustices from occurring again in the future. RÉSUMÉ Cet article décrit les efforts entrepris par des éducateurs et des activistes pour informer la popu- lation de la Colombie Britannique au sujet de l’internement des Canadiens d’origine japonaise pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.     Original Paper Intergenerational Conflict and Cooperation: Japanese Canadian Experience Tatsuo Kage Abstract In 1977 the Japanese Canadian community celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the arrival of the first immigrant to Canada. Looking back at the community’s history, younger generations started questioning their parents and grandparents on their silence about wartime experiences of unjust uprooting and incarceration by Canada’s government. The redress movement started with this awareness of their history. To begin with, leaders of the movement had to overcome resistance from older generations who feared backlash from government and the public. A series of kitchen-table meetings were effective means for helping older people open up and share their wartime experiences with younger generations. Some bilingual Nisei and postwar immigrants, including the author himself, had a role to play in this process by facilitating communication between Japanese speaking Issei and English speaking Sansei. Unified efforts through intergenerational co-operation were crucial for the successful campaign that prevented the government from taking advantage of division in the community. By making the redress for Japanese Canadians an issue of democratic principles, the redress campaign gained support from the wider public, including prominent individuals and organizations.     A Project of the Vancouver Asian Heritage Month This project is a special community building initiative of Vancouver Asian Heritage Month. The intent of this project is to broaden our understand- ing of the Asian presence in North America. It celebrates a legacy which began 450 years ago and continues today. The story is told through a timeline which focuses on the achievements of individual Asian North Americans. Through these achievements, we learn how Asians have long been an integral part of the settlement and development of North America. In the past decade, much research has been done on the history of Asians in North American. But as with any new field of study, the history has been fragmented and focused on individual nations and ethnic groups. This ground-breaking project is the first of its kind to unify the history of the Asian settlement throughout the entire continent including Mexico, United States and Canada. This timeline is a work-in-progress and by no means definitive. It is, however, an important first step towards a more accurate historic record and providing a foundation for further research and compilation. Consider this the first draft of a living project.
