Midwest Service Leaders Conference

Midwest Service Leaders Conference October 9 & 10, 2010 Call for Proposals

You are invited to submit a workshop proposal for the 2010 Midwest Service Leaders Conference, co-hosted by Marquette University and Milwaukee School of Engineering. The Midwest Service Leaders Conference is a student-led regional conference aimed at helping students to develop the skills, passion, and knowledge to inspire meaningful service during and after college. The 2008 Midwest Service Leaders Conference brought together over one hundred bright, energetic, and hopeful students from colleges and universities across the Midwest. The goal: To discover our passions, our paths, and ourselves; to learn about the excitement, rigors, and challenges of our current and future lives; and to take action and continue in the optimistic spirit of those leaders before us. We encourage you to participate in the creation of a program that includes a variety of topics from Program Logistics, Challenges and Triumphs with Leading, Engaging and Inspiring Peers, and Creating Change beyond Volunteerism. These workshops should be designed to share knowledge and experiences from your program, social action, and service with fellow student leaders. There will be three breakout sessions, each lasting 75 minutes. Preference will be given to workshops planned and presented by students.

Program Logistics This session is an opportunity to share your program or student organization. Each presenter(s) will talk about unique attributes, recent events and programming, and/or level of student involvement and leadership in their program. Service Learning, Community Service, Alternative Spring Break, and Ministry programs, as well as other service related student organizations are all invited to present. Please be sure to include ideas on why your strategies are effective and how they might be incorporated into others’ programs.

Challenges and Triumphs with Leading, Engaging and Inspiring Peers This session is an opportunity to share your strategies and successes that you have experienced in working with peers. Some topics that may be included in this session include dealing with apathetic students, dealing with issues of entitlement, overcoming stereotypes, helping students to reflect upon their service, and creating lasting community partnerships with a continually changing student body.

Creating Change beyond Volunteerism This session will focus on helping students think about ways to engage with their communities beyond typical volunteer roles. Whether your organization or program works to educate, advocate, or organize, we want to hear about how you are making change in your communities and working towards equality and justice.

To propose a workshop, please complete the attached workshop proposal form. All submissions must be received by April 16th, 2010. You will be notified by April 30th, 2010 if your proposal has been accepted. Proposals may be faxed to 414-288-3259, e-mailed to [email protected], or mailed to:
