Science News Article Review- Chemistry Much of what we cover in class is in the news. As an extra credit assignment you may select, review and present a chemistry-related science news or research article after getting my approval (by email with your name and class in subject line, at least a week before end of M. Period). Below is information about where articles may be found and the format that must be followed for the reviews.

SOME SITES FOR ONLINE NEWS OR RESEARCH ARTICLES

New York Times Science Page Science Daily BBC Science/Environment News New Scientist PLOS Journals Science ACS Editors Choice Nature Scientific Reports

You may also choose to review an article from our classroom journals (The Economist, Chemical & Engineering News, Science), a journal in our library (e.g. Scientific American, Discover), or another article of your own choice and interest.

GUIDELINES FOR ARTICLE REVIEWS ***must be followed exactly***

1) Header: Name, Class, Date

2) Title: Have a meaningful title (of your choice) in large font

3) Introduction: Briefly describe and discuss the topic of the article, explaining the methods used, summarizing the main scientific points, potential applications, dangers, or controversy. This can be done in two or more paragraphs.

4) Diagram: Include a diagram, figure, or flowchart to help explain the science (place this on the first page).

5) Describe the main “interest groups” and their roles. For example, whose work is being reported and who could be impacted (positively and/or negatively) by the information presented.

6) Your critical assessment of the situation. Write a paragraph assessing what you think of the article (be realistic, put the report in context, avoid terms like “groundbreaking” unless justified).

7) Source(s): Provide the source of the news report you are reviewing, and any original science report this may be referencing (in MLA format, at the end of your review).

8) Turn in a hard copy of your report when you present your report. Attach a hard copy of AT LEAST first page of the article(s) you used.

Extra credit (added to MP grade, maximum of 2 per MP): One point: Article review choice emailed to me (with your name and class in subject line) and a hard copy of your written review (with attachments) following all above guidelines. One point: Article presented in informative fashion to class, explaining the chemistry, in less than 10 minutes).
