English III College Prep Course Outline

Course Description: 09302 English III College Prep—1 Credit Academic English III is a standards based yearlong course designed primarily for juniors who plan to continue their studies in an academic setting. This course is designed to prepare the student in the writing and technical skills he/she will need to function successfully in a competitive school and career. The goal of the course also seeks to instill an understanding and appreciation of British and World Literature. Grammar is reviewed in conjunction with composition through which unity and coherence is stressed. Regular exercises in preparation for the P.S.A.T. and the S.A.T. are included within the curriculum.

Deadlines Readings and writing assignments must be completed by the due date. All assignments are due at the beginning of the class on the due date. Anyone missing an assignment deadline due to a non-excused absence or for any other reason not approved by the instructor beforehand may have one-half letter grade deducted from the final grade for each day the assignment is late.

Attendance and Participation Attendance is mandatory. If you are absent from class you cannot participate in the class discussions and writing. In order to participate fully you need to come to class with the reading and writing assignments completed and with questions, comments and reflections about them prepared. My role as an instructor is to facilitate and orchestrate the discussions and to introduce issues of importance and interest in relation to your reading and writing. This cannot happen if you are not in class. If you absolutely must miss a class, please see me ahead of time or immediately after the missed class.

Teaching Procedures Teaching procedures will follow a cooperative writing reading/workshop model. In a typical class, students will be asked to discuss readings in small and large group settings. Student discussions will also stem from the students’ own required journaling notes. In groups, consensus building and the acceptance of diverse opinions will be stressed. In- class writing, and instructor-guided reading of the elements under discussion will also be included. In the writing portion of the course, students will use their own journaling notes, annotated texts, outside reading and classroom notes to produce high school level writing aimed at articulating new discoveries and forging new connections between ideas in relation to themselves and the world. Students will maintain a record of their writing in a portfolio of in-process and completed work. Students will engage in peer critiquing and be given multiple opportunities to revise their drafts. Final Notes: In order to be successful, you must remain diligent, and highly focused over the coming year. One area in which you will need to be especially diligent is time management. You will need to make a conscious effort to manage your time effectively in order meet all the deadlines in this course. I completely understand the pressures of other “real world” obligations, but I cannot, in good conscience, shortchange the development of the readers and writers in this class.
