Bursary Title: Conservation and Workshop Joinery

Placement Provider: Hayburn & Co Galgorm Road Ballymena BT42 1JU

Placement Location: Galgorm Road, Ballymena

1. Key Duties of Post:

 Manufacturing and fitting of windows, doors, shutters, linings and associated ironmongery.

 Manufacturing of bespoke furniture.

 Restoration and conservation of woodwork in pre-1919 buildings.

 Operation of wood working machinery (for the manufacture of timber components).

 Interpreting dimensional drawings.

 Handling and preparation of materials.

2. Essential Criteria:

 At least 2 years relevant work experience gained through placement or paid employment in the construction or built heritage sector.

 Hold an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent or an Industry Registration Scheme Blue card in Carpentry/Joinery or be willing to achieve the Blue Card, at your own expense, prior to commencement of the placement.

 Demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to developing your skills to work in the built heritage sector.  Ability to comply with the requirements of the placement.

 Prepared to register for and work towards the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Heritage Skills (Construction) in Wood Occupations.

 Prepared to attend a 4 week off-the-job training programme at CITB NI and England as part of the NVQ process.

 Possess a UK Bank or Building Society Account

3. Post Specific Criteria:

 The ability to select and use appropriate hand tools to manufacture and repair period doors, windows, linings and wood panelling.

 Well-developed practical joinery skills.

 The ability to produce timber based items.

 A willingness to disseminate skills, knowledge and experience to other members of the team.

 A willingness to work in a close team under supervision of the team leader.

 Demonstrate an understanding of conservation approaches.

 A willingness to learn new skills and techniques.

 Ability to demonstrate mobility for transport to and from work each day.

4. Desirable Competencies:

 NVQ Level 3 or equivalent or an Industry Registration Scheme Gold card in Carpentry/Joinery. Duration: 1 Year (261 days) Full-time

Hours of Work: Monday – Thursday 8:00am-5:00pm Friday – 8:00am-2:15pm

Bursary: £15,000 tax free
