To: Murray Avenue Families From: Ms. Jennifer Dilks, Principal Re: Student Follow Up for Monday 4-6 Date: April 4-5-15 Many of you are aware of the tragic events reported in the media last week resulting in the deaths of the parents of one of our Murray Avenue students. This tragedy impacts many families in our community and in the Bryn Athyn community, as family members, relatives, close friends, and neighbors try to cope with this news and loss. Students’ knowledge of these events varies from to knowing what transpired to not being aware for different reasons. Many families were traveling over spring break, and sometimes parents choose to monitor and filter their children’s access to local and national news for a variety of reasons. If your child is not aware of this particular situation, we encourage you to talk to your child. Students often know more than we are aware of about a situation. They also hear information through social media or their peers who are less equipped to process this information, clarify rumors, or allay fears and support them. Because of the nature of this incident, we will be talking with students on Monday about how to access help for themselves or friends if they need additional support in coping with this information. We will also be talking about how we can be a supportive school family for the students who are directly impacted by these events who attend school with us. School is our students’ home away from home, and we want this environment to be a supportive one. Students sometimes need our guidance in knowing how to interact with friends who may need our assistance. If you have specific concerns about your child that you would like our assistance with, please feel free to contact one of our school counselors, Ms. Linda Helm or Mrs. Peg Kreutzer by phone or email. Our thoughts are with all those who are impacted by this sad news at this very difficult time.
