This Week- We enjoyed getting back into the routine of school, seeing old friends and meeting new ones! We reviewed and discussed how to be a good friend. We looked at vocabulary pictures and learned that good friends share, take turns, say please and thank you, clean up, keep our hands to ourselves, is quiet, says “hi” and “goodbye” (plus many other things). We discovered that being a good friend means helping others. We read our books several times (AM-Spot Loves his Teacher, PM-There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Books). This is a great way to work on listening skills, vocabulary and prediction skills. We have also been singing a song about coming to school (This Is The Way We Go to School). Next Week- We will continue our Back to School theme and continue to target manners and the “general” rules that apply to school. Our activities will continue to focus on what it means to be a good friend (sharing, saying please/thank you etc). We will chart how we come to school (car or bus). This activity helps reinforce vocabulary as well as math skills of counting and more/less. Miss Meghan (speech) will have a large group language lesson each Friday pertaining to our topic of discussion. All activities and lessons throughout the day take into account IEP goals, student’s strengths and areas of need and student interests. Not only does the staff target these areas in all activities but each lesson/activity also addresses social skills, motor skills (fine and gross), language skills and cognitive skills. All of these are addressed through play! Your child is busy playing and learning throughout the day at Jefferson. 

Curriculum Night You are invited to join us for Curriculum Night on Monday, September 8, 2014. The PM session is from 6:30-7:15. The AM session is from 7:30-8:15. This is a great opportunity for you to come in and learn more about your child’s day. There will be a slide presentation showing a typical day of your child. Please return If you have not already done so, please return the blue RSVP that was sent home in backpacks earlier this week. Since there is a great deal of information presented this evening, we ask that only adults attend. Hope to see you there!

Favorite Apps Throughout the year, I share apps that we use here at school to reinforce concepts and skills we are working on. I try to use either free or inexpensive apps found through the app store. Many families like to download the apps on their ipad or iPhone to help reinforce the concepts at home. A nice one for this time of year is called “I Like School” by Grasshopper Apps. This is a free app that uses photos to tell a short story about going to school and hearing many of the vocabulary words used at school. Simply go to the app store and type in “I Like School” in the search box. Download and enjoy!
