Mt. Carmel Dance Troupe 2009-2010 Tryouts

Mt. Carmel Dance Troupe: The Mt. Carmel Dance Troupe is a group of talented dancers who represent their school year-round through the art of dance. It is an honor to be a member of MCDT and dancers must strive to work their hardest. The troupe performs at all home football and basketball games, pep rallies, community events, as well as taking an array of dances throughout their competition season at high schools surrounding Southern California. From the time their dedication begins in June, the team will focus on expanding their knowledge of the dance world by attending dance conventions, taking master classes, working with professional choreographers, committing to their competition season, all while representing MCHS in a positive manner.

Requirements:  Dancers interested in enrolling in the Advanced or Intermediate Dance Class, please see Terri Shipman, Dance Director, for further information…. (858) 484- 1180 ext. 3161 or [email protected].  Any grade level is welcome to audition for MCDT.  3 HOURS of training at a studio weekly (outside of MCDT). Three to six hours of training is recommended.  Practice 2-3 times/week (after school hours and possible class period). Schedule is TBD.

The Audition:  May 19TH-21ST (3:30-6:00 pm) in S-11 (dance/wrestling room). Results will be e- mailed (and posted on S11’s door) on May 22ND to ALL who auditioned.  IMPORTANT: Dancers will be selected from the Intermediate & Advanced dance tryout on Tuesday, May 19TH TO PROCEED TO AUDITION FOR TROUPE. If you are unable to fit Advanced Dance into your schedule, please see Laurel.  Dancers will be taught both a hip-hop and jazz dance, which they will audition with on Thursday, May 21st.  Dancers will need to bring 8 “8-counts” of individual choreography for the Dance Troupe audition on May 21st.  Dancers will be required to demonstrate the following: * Leaps (Right, Left, and Center) and Calypsos *Triple Pirouettes (quad if possible). A clean spot is a MUST. *A-la-Secondes & Fouettes (Controlled in center and upper body) *Something of CHOICE across the floor (this is your time to shine!!) *Pique/Chaine/Coupe turn combination *Battements *Smooth Transitions/Fluidity

What To Bring/What To Wear:  Dancer must wear ALL BLACK tight fitting top and hot shorts (no baggy clothes or pants please). Must wear jazz shoes (no paws), and tennis shoes for hip hop. Hair MUST be secured.  If you proceed to the Troupe audition…CONGRATULATIONS!! Bring the following (6) items with you on Thursday, May 21 st : ** 2 Letters of Recommendation (dance and academic). LETTERS OF REC. FOR NEW MEMBERS ONLY. ** Most current progress report/report card **Individual Choreography (not your teachers’) with CD/iPod of your music (jazz or lyrical preferred) **INFORMATION SHEET (“MCDT Dancer”), with a stapled 5x7 or 8x10 headshot. **SIGNED PARENT INFORMATION sheet that states your parent is aware of your audition, upcoming dates, and your expectations of Troupe for the 2009-2010 year.

Our 1st meeting will be Tuesday, May 26th in S11 @ 3:30 pm. Those interested in being a Captain must have been on Troupe for ONE YEAR, and be either a junior or senior. A captain must have strong leadership skills and be ready to lead their team for the entire year. I am looking for a Captain that sets a great example for others on and off the dance floor. The captain is the “voice” of the team and cooperates with the Coach the entire year. Captains should act in a timely manner, are proactive, positive, motivating, and make decisions that will not just better themselves…but their team!! You must bring a typed essay (see Laurel for more info.), and a short piece that shows your personality through the dance. You will speak at our first meeting in front of the team and perform your dance. The team will then vote at our meeting anonymously for whom they feel will lead their team best. Our 2009-2010 Captain will be announced at the end of this meeting.
