Residency opportunities for artists in rural locations

Ireland Cill Rialaig, Ballinskelligs, County Kerry An artists retreat that has attracted over the years more than 2,600 artists from Ireland and the world. Cill Rialaig’s purpose is to facilitate the creative work of fine artists, writers, poets, musicians and their peers. By staying at this remote, ascetic village, free of charge and unencumbered by commerce, daily routine and demands, artists are able to recharge and enhance their productivity. Residencies are open to full-time practicing professionals from Ireland and abroad for durations of one to six weeks throughout the year. Competition for residencies is keen, but they are able to accommodate about 140 artists every year. Cow House Studios Cow House Studios is an artist-run space set in the farmland of County Wexford focusing on cross-cultural learning and creative exchange.

Cow House Studios award four, ten week residencies annually. Applications are open to Irish and international artists. In collaboration with the Wexford Arts Centre and Monster Truck Gallery & Studios, all four artists will exhibit in a group show traveling to both exhibition spaces the following Autumn. These residencies offer a valuable support structure for emerging and mid career artists, and brings critically engaging contemporary work to our rural community. The 2013 Artist in Residence Programme will run from September 22nd until November 30th, 2013. Ballinglen Arts Foundation Fellowship Programme, Ballinglen, County Mayo The Foundation's Artist Fellowship Programme is internationally unique in that it is not a retreat residency for the lone artist. Ballinglen Fellowship Artists are invited to bring family and companions with them. They are given, free of any charges, cottages for living, and purpose-built studios for working, within a rural community. Visual artists throughout the world with professional standing in their fields (painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, sculpture) and emerging artists of recognized ability are eligible for residence. West Sweden Nordic Watercolour Museum, West Sweden The museum has five guest studios. Region Västra Götaland has one of the cabins at their disposal during parts of the year for their international guest program. Artists rent cabins for the price of 500 SEK (around £50) per night. Offers artists, illustrators, designers, scenographers, architects and so on, who have familiarised themselves with watercolour techniques, opportunities for artistic work in the form of studio visits, of both short and long duration. http://www.akvarellmuseet.org

Not Quite, Fengersfors, Sweden Not Quite is a transnational forum and network for professional artists, craftspeople and designers. At Fengersfors Mill near Åmål, Not Quite has created workshops, studios, photo labs, gallery and art gallerys. The ambition is to create an exciting and attractive culture center that not only gives a impression in the Nordic region, but also throughout Europe. http://www.notquite.se

KKV Bohusian Artists’ collective workshop primarily intended to provide professional artists with professionally equipped workshops for different techniques and materials but especially in stone – including local granite. Proximity to several quarries, expert craftsmen and specialists helps to facilitate this.

Algarden, Boras Founded in 1973 as printmaking workshop. Situated by River Viskan, it is run by an association of professional artists with support ffrom the municipality and has about 110 members. There are four buildings and two outhouses in a small park area including print workshops and gallery space. Workshops are divided into three for lithography, silkscreen and glass, , one for intaglio printing and one for a digital workshop, kitchen and guest rooms. http://algarden.se

Finland Atelje Stundars, Ostrobothnia, North West Finland Stundars in Korsholm is a large open-air museum and a dynamic centre of culture and art. The museum area consists of more than 60 buildings including a country shop, a school, a farmstead, and crofters’ cottages. The museum area also houses art studios, a printing museum, a crafts shop, a café and a restaurant. Ateljé Stundars provides artists with a studio and guest apartment for two to six months. The residency is free, the artist pays only for her/his travel and living costs. A small grant for the artist’s material is included. The Saari Residency, Minamaki, Western Finland The Saari Residence is maintained by the Kone Foundation and hosts both artists and researchers. Artists of all artistic forms as well as researchers working under a Kone Foundation grant are eligible for residency. During the summer, the Manor is reserved for the use of artist groups. Two month residencies are intended for individual artists, translators and critics of all different disciplines and all nationalities for the purpose of carrying out a project proposal presented in advance. Collectives such as community and environmental artists, independent theatre groups and others can apply for 1 to 4 week residencies. Fiskars Village, Finland Fiskars village hosts hundreds of Artisans, Designers and Artists forming a unique, vivid community of creative professionals. Fiskars Artist in Residence programme offers two separate, fully furnished apartments with private kitchen, bathroom and work space in a traditional, newly renovated house in the heart of Fiskars Village. The residency is mainly self directed with one-month summer periods for research and social networking and two-month winter periods for in depth research and production.The residence is open to professionals from all creative businesses, nationalities and ages and prioritizes international guests. Families and work groups are also welcome to apply. It is requested that the visitor donates an art piece or product to the AiR collection at the end of his/her residency. Ratamo Printmaking and Photography Centre, Jyvaskyla, Central Finland Centre for printmaking and photography with gallery showing regular exhibitions. Designed for professionals and amateurs.

Estonia Polli Talu Arts Center, Estonia Polli Talu Arts Center is based in five farm buildings not far from the port town of Virtsu. Artists may apply to be in residence during the summer. Residencies last 2 - 4 weeks. The cost per person/ per day is Euro 35, which includes housing, meals and studio space. Groups of 10 more recieve a discount of 25 euro per day.
