View either of the following productions: The Renaissance Shakespeare Company’s 1988 TV production (directed by renowned Shakespearean actor Kenneth Branagh)—Act 1—36 min. Sony Pictures’ 1996 feature film (directed by renowned Shakespeare director Trevor Nunn)—also 36 min. o This is in parts on YouTube. Act 1 consists of Parts 1-4 (ending at 8:15 of Part 4.) o Some cinematic and narrative liberties are taken with the opening of this production, but once Viola lands on the shore of Illyria (at 4:30 of Part 1), the production is faithful to Shakespeare’s play.
1.2: Viola Lands Shipwrecked on the Island of Illyria (Both productions switch the order of Scenes 1 and 2.) [Folger Library summary: On the Adriatic coast, Viola, who has been saved from the shipwreck in which her brother may have a drowned, hears about Orsino and Olivia. She wishes to join Olivia’s household, but is told that Olivia will admit no one into her presence. Viola decides to disguise yourself as a boy so that she can join Orsino’s male retinue.]
