Vocabulary:

1. Metaphor: a comparison that does not include the word like or as

2. Simile: a comparison that includes the word like or as

3. Hyperbole: extreme exaggeration used to make a point

4. Personification: the act of giving human qualities to animals or inanimate objects

5. Idiom: an expression whose meaning is different from the meanings of its individual words

6. Symbol: an object that represents an idea

7. Onomatopoeia: a word whose sound suggests its meaning

8. Understatement (Adjective): a statement that is weakened in order to convey a stronger message

9. Alliteration: the repetition of a consonant sound at the beginning of words

10. Cliché: an overused or predictable expression Grandparents Picture Day will be held this Friday, September 8th at 8:00am-8:30am. Please bring $3.00 before 9/7/17 or $5.00 the day of 9/8/17. We will be creating and completing activities based on Grandparent’s Day.

Students should start their “Readers are Leaders” book report forms. Students should be reading 20 minutes daily. Forms will be collected on October 1st. This is not optional and is a grade.

The math test will be on 0-2 times tables this Friday. Please use this week’s homework as a practice test.

We will begin reading our first chapter of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.

We will have a test NEXT MONDAY, September 11th on figurative language. Monday, September 11th, is Patriotic day. Students can wear red, white, or blue shirt with their IVY uniform bottoms. We will be discussing and completing activities to commemorate this holiday. Parents are invited to the ELAC/ SSC meeting on September 11th.

In addition, our class will have a celebration for all September Birthdays on September 8, 2017. If you would like to participate, please let Mrs. Robottom know.
