2017 Essay Topic “An Irish Saint - Not Named Patrick”

Dear Applicant:

We appreciate your interest in our scholarship program. AOH will award four $500 scholarships to Kansas City area Catholic youth parishioners attending a Catholic High School.

Application forms follow this letter. To qualify for potential selection all applications must be completed and electronically submitted by email before midnight July 3, 2017 to email address [email protected] on the subject line please type in AOH. All entries must be submitted as Microsoft Word files.

A completed application consists of these four items:

1) The first page of the application must be completely filled out.

2) The second page of the application provides you with the opportunity to tell us about yourself. Tell us what makes you an exceptional candidate for selection.

3) This year’s applicants must provide an original essay, on “An Irish Saint not Named Patrick”. You may submit a biographic sketch but the judges will also welcome input as to why you selected this saint and if there is any personal significance in your selection.

Please do not put your name on the essay title page or on pages of the essay. Your name should only appear on the first page of the application. The essay should be double-spaced with a 12-point font. There is a maximum of 500 words excluding “a” and “the.” Please put the total number of words at the end of your essay. A bibliography is required and is not included in the 500-word count maximum. Credit all relied upon sources and any historical facts cited.

4) In addition, please attach a scanned copy (this may be a .pdf file and submitted as a separate file) of your most recent transcript.

All scholarship winners must be able to attend and be prepared to read their essay during the Order’s awards presentation on August 10 at 7pm. Additionally, scholarship recipients may be invited to read their essay during the Kansas City Irish Festival, September 1-3, 2017.

Scholarship winners are selected based on the quality of the submission. Volunteer judges are members of the Hibernians and they will not know the name of the applicant whose paper they are scoring. All applicants will be notified of the results by email by August 5, 2017.

Original theme – An Irish Saint – Not Named Patrick - maximum 500 words show the number of words at the end of the essay (do not count “a” and “the” as words).
