Iowa Community Health AmeriCorps Program
Are you interested in gaining experience in the fields of health and wellness while giving back to your community? The Iowa Community Health AmeriCorps Program is looking for individuals to partner with local non-profit organizations, health centers, and communities to work on initiatives to increase the health and wellness of its citizens.
Term Length: 7 month, 900-hour (Serve approximately 32 hours a week) Approximate Dates of Service: February 1-August 31, 2016
Host sites include: Madison County Healthcare System, Winterset, IA Easter Seals Iowa, Des Moines, IA Adaptive Sports Iowa, Ames, IA Lucas County Health Center, Chariton, IA *Additional sites may be added
Possible responsibilities include: Administer assessments to determine needs and priorities for community Research, organize, and implement initiatives to reduce obesity such as community gardens, walking school bus programs, smarter lunchrooms Develop nutrition education programs Recruit and manage volunteers to support initiatives
Benefits include: $6,265 living stipend $2,865 Education Award upon successful completion of the program be used to pay back qualified student loans or toward tuition at a qualified institution of higher education (Individuals aged 55 years and older can transfer the award to eligible children or grandchildren) Health insurance for those not currently covered Great work experience, professional development opportunities, and networking
The minimum requirements for the AmeriCorps position include: Some college U.S. Citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien Age 17 or older (no upper age limit) Some experience or knowledge in the areas of health and wellness, and the willingness and ability to collaborate with community members to develop programs and initiatives to improve the overall health of a community
