Among other activities, Sharnay has been battalion 26 commander for the Burke High School JROTC since 2007 and 27 presently serves as treasurer for her school’s chapter of the 28 National Honor Society. She is a member of Burke High School’s 29 student council and has been a part of the College of Charleston’s 30 Upward Bound program since 2006; and 31 32 Whereas, believing everyone should take an active part in bettering 33 his or her community, Sharnay is an active member of her church, 34 Lord of the Harvest Christian Faith Center, and has volunteered for 35 a number of organizations, such as Debbie’s Kids toy drive and 36 Crisis Ministry food drive; and 37 38 Whereas, she has participated in several programs designed to 39 foster her leadership abilities and hone her talents, among them the 40 Cadet Officer Leadership School for Air Force JROTC at 41 Newberry College; and 42

[4057] 2 1 Whereas, in recognition of her hard work, Sharnay has received 2 many honors, including the Air Force JROTC Humanitarian Aid 3 Award, Strong Leader Academy West Point Society certificate, 4 and Marine Corps League Low Country Detachment award for 5 Outstanding Leadership. She was also named Class of 2009 6 Upward Bounder of the Year; and 7 8 Whereas, underlying her success is her firm belief in the 9 sentiments expressed in her favorite quotation: “Can’t is powerful. 10 I am amazed at the things I accomplish simply because I do not 11 know what I cannot do” (O’Bryant Seabrook); and 12 13 Whereas, adding further luster to Sharnay’s already stellar high 14 school career, as a senior she has won more than five hundred 15 thousand dollars in scholarship offers to five different schools, thus 16 breaking Burke’s record for the greatest number of scholarships 17 earned by an individual student; and 18 19 Whereas, it is with great pride that the members of the House 20 recognize such an outstanding South Carolina student as Sharnay 21 Virgie Green, and the members wish her much success as she 22 launches the next phase of her academic career. Now, therefore, 23 24 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 25 26 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 27 by this resolution, recognize and honor Sharnay Virgie Green, 28 Burke High School graduating senior, for her excellence in 29 leadership, and congratulate her upon receiving scholarship offers 30 amounting to more than five hundred thousand dollars. 31 32 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 33 Sharnay Virgie Green. 34 XX 35
