Picture
Observe: There is a African American family with 12 people There is a small house in the background with wooden shutters on the windows There is three houses in total with really big chimneys The tall black man is looking at his family The cabin is made out of bricks There is three people wearing hats A little girl has something in her hands A baby is being held by an older women who is probably the mom The people arranged in an orderly fashion and are probably lining up for a family picture One little boy is wearing a tie One little girl is carrying a hat or a basket There is one big tree in the background and other trees around The ground is probably dirt and grass and there is leaves on the ground There is a sign on the cabin It is a black and white photo It looks warm outside They are wearing plain clothes There are 2 cabins in the background
Reflect: To show an African American family and their small plantation The Detroit Publishing Co. produced the picture The audience is kids to learn about what slave life was back then The houses are small because there was slavery going on at the time A camera took this photo back when there was no color cameras We can learn that slave life was hard back then and that they had really small cabins to sleep in If this was created today the picture would be in color and they would not be slaves. The picture was probably taken in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s The picture was taken in Savannah Georgia
Question: Who are these people? Are they slaves or are they freed slaves? Were they having a family picture taken? Was this photo important back then? Why was the photo taken? Was the picture taken in the 1800’s or 1900’s? Why was the family getting their picture taken? Was the picture taken at night or at day? Is the picture burnt at the top? Document
Observe: It is 29 paragraphs It is really long There are quotes in some of the paragraphs The text is arranged into paragraphs It says sale of slaves at the top It says it was written in Savannah, Georgia Written by Price M. Butler It is a sequel to Mrs. Kemble’s journey There are no pictures and there is nothing very unusual It talks about where the negros came from Talks about how the slaves were treated Talks about the auctions and sales for slaves
Reflect: The purpose of the text is to show how slaves lived back then Price M. Butler wrote it The audience is anyone who wants to learn about how slaves lived back in the 1800’s Written in 1859 Slavery was still going on when this was made A pencil and paper were used to make this You can learn how slaves lived from this and how they were treated You can learn about how they were sold Where they came from This gives a very accurate description of how they were sold and what the auctions were like at the time
Question: Was the document important at the time? Was Price M. Butler a supporter of slaves or was he African American? Did the writer go to this slave auction? Was the writer a slave himself? Were slave auction common in Georgia? Why was this written? Were the slaves caught or were they being resold? If so how did they get caught? Did the slave family ever get freed?
