Biology Lab Safety Contract
Biology is a hands-on class that can be enjoyable for the students. All students will be doing activities that use living organisms and chemicals. Safety is the highest priority for students, parents and myself as the instructor. To ensure that correct procedures are followed in the lab, the following rules have been established in the student safety contract. A copy will be given to each student, and must be signed by the student and by a parent or guardian. Your signature as a parent or guardian indicates that you have read the contract, are aware of the rules for participation and will instruct your son or daughter to follow these rules.
YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE LAB AREA FOR ANY REASON UNLESS I HAVE GIVEN YOU PERMISSION TO WORK ON A LAB OR OTHER ASSIGNMENT IN THAT AREA DURING CLASS TIME.
Conduct yourself in a mature, responsible manner at all times. Socializing in the lab, horseplay, threats, practical jokes, and pranks are extremely dangerous in any lab and will not be tolerated. Be aware of what is going on around you at all times. Report any dangerous conditions to me immediately. Always report any accident or injury to me immediately, no matter how small and insignificant it seems!!
Blood any other bodily fluids from injuries must be cleaned up correctly to prevent the spread of HIV and other life threatening diseases. Notify me immediately when any bodily fluid is seen anywhere in the lab or classroom. I will supervise the cleanup according to the established procedure.
Lotions, cosmetics, lipsticks, lip balm, food, drink, candy, mints, or gum will NOT be permitted in the lab at any time!
Always read the lab procedures thoroughly before the lab begins. Do not do any procedure that is not outlined as part of the lab without my permission. Carefully follow all directions in the lab procedures.
Always wear protective goggles any time you are working in the lab.
If chemicals come into contact with your eyes, notify me immediately and rinse your eyes at the nearest rinse station for 15- 20 minutes while forcing your eyes open.
Keep your hands away from your face, eyes, mouth any time you are working with chemicals as it may bring you in contact with substances that could cause burns or other serious injury. Wash your hands with soap and water at the end of each experiment.
Your experiment must be monitored at all times. Either you or your lab partner must watch the experiment until it is complete. If this is not possible, notify me immediately so that arrangements can be made. Do not wander around the lab, distract other students or interfere with other students.
Only your lab instructions, worksheets, report sheet, calculator, and pencil may be brought to lab. No other materials will be allowed. Your workspace should be kept clear of any unnecessary equipment, glassware, and materials. Keep your workbench clean at all times. Wipe up any wet or dry spills immediately. After the experiment is finished, wipe down your counter with soap and water. Store all equipment in the proper space and clean all glassware used in the experiment before storing it. All glassware must be washed and kept clean when not in use.
All broken glassware is to be placed in the white container, located in the back of the classroom, which is marked for this purpose. Never handle broken glassware with your bare hands. Always sweep it into a dustpan with a brush, than carry it carefully to the waste container. REPORT ANY SPILLS OR BREAKAGE TO ME IMMEDIATELY!
Never touch, smell, or taste any material we use in lab unless I specifically tell you to do so. I will demonstrate the proper technique for smelling substances for you. Never use mouth suction to fill a pipette or siphon a liquid. Always use a bulb or pipet pump. NEVER squirt or blow ANY substance toward another person.
Always read the label on the container before you get any chemical from a container. Carry the materials back to your workspace very carefully, taking care not to bump another person or spill the materials. Take only as much material as you need for the experiment.
NEVER REMOVE ANY LABORATORY EQUIPMENT OR MATERIALS FROM THE CLASSROOM FOR ANY REASON; YOU WILL PERMANENTLY LOSE YOUR LAB PRIVILEGES! Dispose of all chemicals and waste products after the experiment is complete. Always follow my directions for the proper disposal of materials. Never dispose of chemicals or waste products in the sink or wastebasket unless I specifically tell you to do so.
Your lab station must be cleaned up at the end of the experiment and all materials, equipment and drawer keys must be returned to me before you will be allowed to leave the room.
In case there is a fire alarm or tornado drill while we are in lab, turn off all heating devices, gas valves, water and electrical equipment immediately and leave the lab and go to the designated area.
When transferring chemicals from one container to another, hold the containers away from your body and not pointed toward your face. Never transfer any chemical near open flame or heat source. Never take any lab chemicals or materials out of the lab area. Take care when carrying any chemical to or from your workspace. Hold all containers securely and walk slowly and carefully to your destination.
When working with burners or heat sources, never look into the container being heated. Never point test tubes or other containers that are being heated at yourself or another person. If the substance becomes hot enough, it may shoot out of the container, causing injury. Never touch metal or glass that is to be heated or that has been heated with your bare hands. Always use tongs or test tube holders to handle the materials. Never leave a lit burner or other active heat source unattended. Always assume that these devices are on and extremely hot.
Never put hot equipment or materials directly on the workbench or any flammable material like paper. Use a hot pad under it to allow it to cool slowly without damaging its surroundings. NEVER COOL OFF HOT GLASS BY PUTTING IT IN COLD WATER! It may shatter and fragment in a wide area.
Students who willfully damage, abuse or misuse lab equipment, materials, specimens, books, and furniture will lose lab privileges.
THERE IS NEVER ANY GOOD REASON FOR NOT ASKING FOR HELP IF YOU NEED IT. I AM HERE TO HELP YOU LEARN AND ENJOY THE LAB EXPERIENCE. YOUR SAFETY IS MY RESPONSIBILITY AND HIGHEST PRIORITY. Help me by asking questions. You aren’t the only one in the class that has the question, only the one who has the courage to ask it.
I, ______, have read and agree to follow all of the lab safety rules above. I realize I must obey these rules to ensure my safety and that of the other students and instructor. I will cooperate to help maintain a safe lab environment. I will also follow written and oral instructions given to me by my teacher. I am aware that any violation of the safety contract that results in unsafe behavior in the lab can result in me being removed from the lab, given a failing grade and/or detention and suspension from the laboratory.
