Korean Folktale: Heungbu and Nolbu (The Two Brothers)

Korean Folktale: Heungbu and Nolbu (The Two Brothers)

Objectives: In this lesson students practice reading, writing and performing a Korean folktale in English.

Teaching Aids/ Materials: Handouts, video (Extension: Large paper, markers etc.)

Students: High-level middle school students (this could work in all grades. I did it with advanced 1st Grade students)

**Note on time: I did this during an English camp. I planned 45 min for this but it took 1 hour and 15 minutes+. If doing during regular class time it will need more than one class period. The script writing takes the longest of all the sections. I only had 4 groups of 4 students. Much more time is necessary if doing with a normal size class (30-35 students)

Outline

Warm – Up: (5 min) What folktales do you know? (Korean or other nationalities)

Video: (7 min) Watch video. This is a project done by a group of Korean American High School students. It is a video adaption of the Heungbu and Nolbu story. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9VJWsdOUyI

Write the script: (30-40 min) Using copies of story in English and the handouts have students summarize the text and write a dialog they will perform for the class Text of the story: http://www.tparents.org/Library/Unification/Talks2/Kirkbride/Kirkbride- 100629.htm More Korean folktales in English: http://www.sejongsociety.org/korean_theme/korean_folk_tales/

Perform the dialog: (15 min) Have students practice in their groups and then perform their dialog for the class

Extension: Make story poster. Draw pictures and write brief text to illustrate the story
