Latin I Aristoi Classical Academy – 2015-2016
Dear Students,
A.D. 476 marks the decisive end of the Western Roman Empire. This signified a startling close to a monumental chapter of human history, one that witnessed the rise of a tiny farming village to the seat of global power. Through the leadership of audacious men such as Julius Caesar, Scipio the Elder and Constantine, Rome had been a formidable presence in the Ancient world, politically and culturally.
It makes much sense then that the footprints of Roman culture have persisted to this day. Modern inhabitants of the Western world owe much of their worldview, governmental systems, philosophical and religious attitudes, classical myths and even the virtues with which we hold each other accountable to this fallen civilization.
This is why the study of Latin is so important to me. I am an individual who makes informed decisions, but only because I have been molded by a greater culture; even Sir Isaac Newton, who was an outstanding scientist, acknowledged his debt to those who came before him: “If I have seen any further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
Likewise, as you come of age in this fast-paced era, there will be a growing need to reason with the world and make decisions of your own that will affect yourself and those around you. What a joy it is, then, to conduct such a life fortified by a rigorous Latin background. Aside from the superficial benefits of developing one's vocabulary and being able to read state and college mottoes, you will be equipped with the greatest panel of “giants” that you could hope to have aside from parents and teachers: the ancients.
Regardless of where life shall take you, the journey begins here. I am proud to have you as a willing and eager participant in bringing this language to life every week. Your hard work and dedication will prove fruitful, and lead you to consult elders like Virgil, Cicero, Livy or Seneca for guidance in your future role as a citizen of virtuous character. Without further ado, let us begin.

Mr. Aborisade Course Scope: The aim of this course is to equip you with the knowledge and form of the Latin language in an expedient manner. This is to ensure a solid advancement to your grade level's respective course in the following year.
Course Summary: Over the course of this year, you will… - Develop a knowledge of the indicative expression of Latin - Learn various aspects of Pompeian society - Enjoy and analyze an oral retelling of The Iliad

Your genuine contributions to the class will always hold great value. When it is necessary to give an objective assessment of classwork, it will fall under the following categories:
30% Daily Work: homework | participation | class work 30% Quiz Work: vocabulary and grammar | memorization 40% Major Work: language exams | recitations | cultural projects | thematic essays
* Please note that late work is subject to the guidelines outlined in the Aristoi Parent Student Handbook, and as such will not be accepted for credit.
Classroom Decorum:
During class all students are expected to be both polite and attentive. The list of behaviors below, while not exhaustive, exemplifies these qualities: Bring all materials to class everyday. Be ready to learn when class begins, i.e. quietly seated and with all of your supplies at hand. Listen carefully. Treat your fellows and your environment with respect. Avoid unpleasant surprises by consulting your planner regularly. Monitor your progress and ask questions or seek help whenever necessary, you are responsible for the quality of your own education.
Outside of class you should focus on preserving your collection of Latin knowledge primarily through consistent and appropriate study and review. Students must "brush their Latin teeth" by regularly studying vocabulary and grammar, both old and new, for 10 minutes of focused studying per day. Course Outline:
