Patient Participation Group - We are still a very new group and looking for more representatives from the surgery population especially mums or dads, carers, people from ethnic minorities, teenagers / twenty somethings or anyone interested in helping to engage the wider practice community – you do not have to commit a lot of time (meetings every 2 months) and if you are not sure if you want to be a part but would like attend a meeting to see if you would be interested then speak to Carey, the Practice Manager, or Sue Smith, Reception Manager, for details of dates and times.

Spotlight On.. – we pick one clinician per issue and look at their clinical specialities and a bit of history – Sister Jean Berritt

Jean Joined us in November 2010 from a District Nurse background and put herself through a lot of education to gain competencies across all nursing requirements and became our Lead Nurse last year.

Jean is our COPD, Diabetic, Child Imms, Leg Ulcer and Heart Lead plus deals with a lot more background admin and general nursing work and keeps the Nursing Team going.

The surgery embraced her District Nurse background to carry on Community work – Jean regularly does home visits for patients too unwell or unable to come in to surgery for Annual COPD or Diabetes reviews and does our Home Flu Visits each year. Some of the Specialist Clinics within the Surgery Asthma Our GP’s run all Asthma Reviews and you will be asked to attend regularly to check you are on the right inhalers – and know how to use them ! COPD Sister Berritt runs an annual review clinic which (Chronic Obstructive includes spirometry (breathing hard into a Pulmonary Disease) measuring device) to check your lungs are ok and ensure you are on the best medication for your type of COPD. CHD Dr Clarke and Dr Rivett see CHD patients (Coronary Heart annually who are not under the Cardiologists at Disease) a hospital. General health questions & measurements are used to determine best lifestyle changes and /or treatment for Type 1 or 2 diabetes NHS Health Healthcare Assistant Corrine runs these clinics. It consists of a fasting blood test before your appointment and Corrine goes through lifestyle questions, measurements and results to help you decide on how to improve your future health. Midwife Beverley Quinn is attached to our surgery and sees pregnant ladies on a Monday afternoon at Martins Oak (other times/places by arrangement with her) Cognitive Patients can be seen in the surgery for help with Behavioural phobias, anxiety, stress and so on – your GP will Therapy refer if appropriate CQC Inspection at Conquest Hospital

The reports praise the caring nature of staff saying “We found caring across the trust was good with many positive comments from patients and their carers.” This was reflected in both acute hospitals (Conquest and Eastbourne DGH) and the reports into community services

We are waiting for the second part of this report to come out recognising the efforts made by the Conquest to improve all areas and remain positive that they will overcome any negative press.

Online News - Patient Access

We are now offering the second stage of access to our clinical system (Emis Web) which allows you to access the following online-

 Repeat prescriptions – view & order your regular medication  Appointment Booking – We offer GP appointment slots and some blood tests and will be offering Seasonal Influenza booking online later on this year  Problems - Summary listing of current medical areas of note  Allergies – Drug, food or animal allergies are highlighted

This is also available as a phone app for I phone users – you will need a registration form from reception with log in codes and instructions before you can register yourself from home.

We have over 1200 patient now with the ability to access records and services from home

Friends & Family -

We have a box in reception (next to booking in touch screen) or an online version for patients to fill in a small form with how they would rate the surgery with a view to recommending to friends or family should they hypothetically find themselves unfortunately in need of our services – The link to this on our website is www.martinsoak.co.uk and we would ask that you offer your honest opinions – results are published also on our website and in the surgery A&E or 999 - When and Why?
