Sandpaper Letters and Numbers

1

Sandpaper Letters and Numbers The lesson for these two materials is the same. Lesson 1

- Invite the child to work with you and bring the material to the work area.

- Take out the first letter or number you will be introducing. With letters it is nice to begin with the first letter of the child’s name as they will take an immediate interest in “their” letter.

- Place the letter or number in front of you. Use your left hand to hold the letter or number in place by placing your hand on the top left hand corner. (This is also how children are encouraged to hold their paper when beginning to write.)

- Using the first two fingers of the right hand gently, slowly trace the letter or number saying the name or sound.

- Repeat this technique a few times. You may also give examples of words associated with the letters like cat for c. If you choose to do this, try to use different associative words each time so the children will associate the shape of the letter with its name or sound not another word.

- Ask the child if she would like to trace the letter or number. The first few times you will have to place your hand over the child’s to help them learn the technique. 2

- Once the child can name all the letters and numbers you can ask them to bring you a letter or number from the box.

- The child will show you the letter or number and then return it to the box. Then the child will come and ask for the next letter or number to find.
