We are a decile 6 primary school situated on the south coast of western southland, 40km from Invercargill. The school roll fluctuates between 155-190. Our mission statement, “We open our doors with Aroha” forms the nucleus of our school culture. We are very proud of our high performing bilingual class which ranges from Year 3-6.We have a very supportive community, highly professional staff and some amazing children.

Principal School Community Riverton Primary School is a decile 6 primary school contributing to Aparima College. Riverton is located on the Estuary of the Aparima River and the sea. It offers a wide range of outdoor activities involving the river, the sea and the bush. The economic base of the area is fishing, farming, tourism and related small industries. It is also a popular retirement and holiday town. The school enjoys strong community support. The township also offers a variety of social opportunities. Approximately 29% of the local community identifies as having Maori ancestry. Teachers provide stimulating programmes, with an emphasis on learning styles and individual needs. There is a strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy. Children with learning (remedial and extension) needs, social and behavioural needs, are catered for within a range of programmes operating throughout the school. The mission statement, “We Open our Doors with Aroha” is the nucleus of the school culture. Children learn in a supportive, caring environment, which encourages responsibility for self monitoring appropriate learning and social behaviour. The staff, parents and board work as a team, to ensure the very best opportunities and resources are available to support the teaching and learning programmes.

The Buildings and Resources The school consists of 10 classrooms, two blocks of four and a double prefab block. The administration block includes the library, resource room, staffroom, medical room and offices. The school hall includes a storage shed, small teaching space and canteen/kitchen. Each classroom has at least two computers, 6 iPads and in the senior classes chromebooks, all running on a robust network system. We also have a dedicated music room and well equipped sports shed. The school is well resourced in terms of ʻhands onʼ learning resources, technology, print resources and personnel. The buildings are in good repair and regularly maintained.

In addition the school employs five teacher aides. Two of the Teacher Aides are trained in teaching Reading, using a programme called ʻMulti Litʼ that accelerates children with reading needs. Children who need extra reading and writing support are rostered daily on this programme. Our focus is on quality education. Teachers are trained in identifying and using techniques that meet the learning styles of each child.
