FREE ADMISSION Dear friends, Last fall, Third Coast Baroque’s debut series ¡Sarabanda! focused on examining the African and Latin American folk music roots of the sarabande. Today, we will be following the paths of the chaconne, passacaglia and other ostinato rhythms – with origins similar to the sarabande – as they spread across Europe during the 17th century. With this program that we are calling Groove!, we present those intoxicating rhythms in the fashion and flavor of the different countries where they gained popularity. The great European composers wrote masterpieces using the rhythms of these ancient dances to create immortal pieces of art, but their weight and significance is such that we tend to forget where their origins lie. Bach, Couperin, and Purcell – to name only a few – wrote music for highly sophisticated institutions. Still, through these dance rhythms, they were searching for something similar to what the more ancient civilizations had been striving to attain: a connection to the spiritual world.

  • Concert Programs
    A direct connection with the audience is at the core of all of Third Coast Percussion’s work, whether the musicians are speaking from the stage about a new piece of music, inviting the audience to play along in a concert or educational performance, or inviting their fans around the world to create new music using one of their free mobile apps. Third Coast Percussion maintains a busy touring schedule, with past performances in 33 of the 50 states plus Canada, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Poland, and performances this season at BAM, Cal Performances, University Musical Society, the Krannert Center, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the Joyce Theater, and the ensemble’s first tour of Asia. The quartet’s curiosity and eclectic taste have led to a series of unlikely collaborations that have produced exciting new art. The ensemble has worked with engineers at the University of Notre Dame, architects at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, dancers at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and musicians from traditions ranging from the mbira music of Zimbabwe’s Shona people, to indie rockers, to some of the world’s leading concert musicians. A direct connection with the audience is at the core of all of Third Coast Percussion’s work A commission for a new work from composer Augusta Read Thomas in 2012 led to the realization that commissioning new mu- sical works can be—and should be—as collaborative as any other artistic partnership. THE THIRD COAST Catherine J. Davis 27 Pages The Third Coast is a photographic exploration of the vernacular landscape of the US Gulf Coast. Stretching some 1,600 miles from the mouth of the Rio Grande in Texas to the Florida Everglades, America's southernmost shore is vast and complex. The region is a patchwork of both the natural and built environments, a tangled combination of history and geography, culture and ecology that reflects an intimate and ever-evolving relationship between man, land and sea. The Gulf Coast resists tidy hierarchies or easy classification. Rather, the rhythms of the region comprise its own syntax, a way in which seemingly dissimilar locations speak to one another with awareness and familiarity. More than just describing the landscape, this body of work looks to explore the Third Coast's visual vocabulary, it’s sense of place, and the recurrent themes that create the area's distinct material and cultural identity.

The Rockefeller Foundation–funded program, Ecological Conversations: DGender, Science, and the Sacred, has brought together a diverse group of scholars and activists to engage in scientific, political, and spiritual discourses raised by the global nexus of women’s and environmental movements. During the past two years, several UO faculty and graduate students have joined the conversation via an ongoing program seminar, a public lecture series, and CSWS-sponsored retreats and conferences. Creating a context where a diverse cohort of scholars are given the opportunity to interact and participate in an ongoing dialogue has had a catalytic impact on the work of all involved.
