News from the Reading Room November 6, 2015

Greetings!

Family Reading Night will be held Thursday, November 19th from 5:30-8:00. Some of the exciting and fun activities that will be offered include storyteller, Bob Kann, a book exchange, raffles, and voting for your favorite 4th grade book banner. For your convenience, Papa John’s Pizza will be available for purchase beginning at 5:30. Please mark your calendars and come join us for a wonderful way to celebrate reading! 

Following are the Illinois State Standards and activities each grade worked on throughout the week.

Kindergarten: RF.k.1d Recognize and name all upper-and lowercase letters of the alphabet. RF.K.2a Recognize and produce rhyming words. RF.K2d Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial, and final sounds in three- phoneme words. RF.K.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. RF.K.3c Read common high frequency words by site. RF.K.4 Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding.

Students continued to practice identifying and creating rhyming words. They also worked on segmenting and identifying how many syllables a word contained. Students also continued to practice Tucker signing and Dolch’s pre-primer site words. I continue to encourage you to have students practice these site words with you for a few minutes every day by using the flashcards I sent home. If your student needs another copy of these, please write me a note or email me at [email protected] .

First Grade: RI.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text. RL1.3 Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story. RL.1.7 Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, settings, or events. RF.1.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. RF.1.4 Read with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

Students continued to work on vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills using a nonfiction passage called Animal Costumes. They seemed to really enjoy the article’s theme of animals dressing up in different costumes, and using the computers to highlight vocabulary and practice reading. Students continued to practice Dolch’s 1st grade site words. Please continue to practice these words with your student on a nightly basis using the flashcards I sent home. Please write me a note or email me at [email protected] if your student needs another set of flashcards.

(over) Second Grade: RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. RF.2.3a Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words. RF.2.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. RF.2.4b Read on-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.

Students practiced creating and identifying words using the short vowel “o “and reviewed short vowel “a” ,”e”, and “I” words. Students also read a short passage to practice reading words with short “o”, and to increase vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension strategies. Students continued to practice Dolch’s 2nd grade site words. Please use the flash cards I sent home to continue to practice these words each day. Please write me a note or email me at [email protected] if your student is in need of another copy of the flash cards.

Just a reminder: Winter benchmark testing is scheduled for January 11-22. After these assessments are given and analyzed, I will be contacting you to discuss your student’s progress in Title 1 reading. You will be given the option of a phone conference or to set up an appointment to attend a conference. If at any time you have any questions or concerns about your student’s progress, please contact me at 815-697-2642 or email me at [email protected]. Together we can accomplish great gains for your student!

Hope you have time to check out our reading web site http://www.cusd4.org for informational tip and helpful reading strategies. Have a safe and wonderful weekend! 
