Global Youth Entrepreneurship Forum 2006 Jogjakarta, 6th – 9th September

WORLD ASSEMBLY OF YOUTH

GLOBAL YOUTH ENTREPRENEURSHIP FORUM

“ICT AND SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT”

6 – 9 September 2006

Jogja Expo Centre, Sleman, Jogjakarta, Indonesia

Background

Youth unemployment has become the biggest developmental challenge in almost every country in the world in the 21st century. According to International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates, 60 million young people are searching for work but cannot find any. 80 per cent of the young jobless are in the developing countries and economies in transition. In all developing countries across the world, youth unemployment is growing annually at more than 15 percent. Many countries in Asia especially are still struggling to boost their economic growth in order to provide jobs for all the youths entering the job market each year.

Government efforts to mitigate the unemployment problem by creating job opportunities through planned programmes both in private and public sectors have not touched even the tip of the iceberg. Some countries still depend on the injection of external investment funds and external expertise to transform into fast growing economic development. However, without entrepreneurial capabilities which are well developed or potentially available, external funds will be wasted on projects that will not provide long term economic growth. Present educational system produces job-seekers only but not job-creators and income generators. Globalization has had little effect on less developed countries to boost their economic development and the gap between the rich and the poor, the skilled and the unskilled as well as digital divide continues to widen.

The purpose of this Global Youth Entrepreneurship Forum (GYEF) is to gather youths all over the world to exchange ideas and experience of the development and implementation of youth entrepreneurship strategies in order to reduce the youth
