 Article presents three models of analysis of the effects of different environmental situations on brain development and organization  Insult model argues against brain plasticity  Environmental model regards the brain as infinitely plastic  Transactional model is the favored model on cognitive and socioemotional functioning during infancy presented in this article . Brain development and organization is considered an interaction between genetically coded programs for the formation and connectivity of brain structures and environmental situations . Research studies are examined that support the idea of plasticity during the 1st 2 yrs of life . An examination of normal developmental processes provide the basis of explanations for abnormal brain organization and development through the drawing of parallels to abnormal development
