Reading Counts!

Tentative Test Dates: Tentative Test Dates: 1st Quarter: Wed., Oct. 5 3rd Quarter: Wed., March 1 (A Day), Thurs., Oct. 6 (B Day), Thurs., March 2 (B Day) (A Day) 2nd Quarter: Wed., Dec. 14 4th Quarter: Wed., May 3 (A Day), Thurs., Dec. 15 “READING COUNTS!” (B Day), Thurs., May 4 (B Day) English 10 Outside Reading-2016-2017 (A Day)

Outside reading will be worth 25 points 1st and 3rd quarters and 50 points 2nd and 4th quarters. In order to get the grade you want, you will need to do two things. First, you will need to earn a given number of points (see chart below). Second, you need to pass the test(s) over the book(s) you choose with a minimum score of 68% (17 questions correct out of 25). Each book is worth a specific number of points. To find out the number of points of a book:  Check the list of books that is posted in your English classroom, in the library, or on the library’s website. This is the list of books that are on the shelves of the Manteno High School library.  For titles that are not a part of our library’s collection, go to http://www.src.scholastic.com/ecatalog to make sure there is a test available and to confirm the number of points the book is worth.  NOTE: Always check the list of “Blocked Quizzes” (copied on the back of this sheet) to be sure the test you take will receive credit. If a title is on this list, you will not receive any credit for that test. To receive credit in English 10, the book must be worth at least 6 points. The number of points you earn each quarter determines the grade you will receive. Here are your options for English 10:  18 points or more = A (100% or 25/25-1st or 3rd quarter or 50/50-2nd or 4th quarter)  16-17 points = B (88% or 22/25 or 44/50)  14-15 points = C (78% or 19/25 or 39/50)  12-13 points = D (68% or 17/25 or 34/50)  6-11 points = F (50% or 13/25 or 25/50)

 If you do not pass an outside reading test with the required 68%, you will receive the same percentage of the outside reading grade that you earned on the quiz up to 12/25 or 24/50.

One way to accumulate the necessary points and earn a higher score is to score at least a 68% (17 correct out of 25) on the computer-generated 25-question test. If you accumulate additional points over and above those necessary for a particular grade, those points are not transferable to the next grading period. EXAMPLE: If you want to get an “A” for your outside reading score, you have two options:  You may read just one book worth at least 18 points and pass the test with a 68%.  You may read several books, each worth fewer than 18 points but adding up to at least 18 points and score at least a 68% on each test.  Regardless of the number of books you read to accumulate your 18 points, your score will be 100% or 25/25 (1st or 3rd quarter) or 50/50 (2nd or 4th quarter).

If you take a test but do not score at least a 68%, you may read another book(s) as long as you accumulate the required number of points by the due date. If you do not pass any outside reading points, your grade will reflect the percentage you received.

EXAMPLE: If you do not pass any outside reading tests for the quarter, you will receive the same percentage of the outside reading grade that you earned on the quiz up to 12/25 (1st or 3rd quarter) or 24/50 (2nd or 4th quarter) points.  You read a book and earn a 44% (11 correct answers out of 25), you will receive 11/25 points or 22/50 points in the grade book.

***TESTING PROCEDURE: Your English class will be going into Lab E11 as a group to take outside reading tests on the due date for each nine-weeks period.  If you have finished a book prior to the test date, you may arrange to take a test WITH ME IN MY CLASSROOM, or I will write you a pass to LAB E11. Tests must NOT be taken anywhere else in the building.  You MUST sign the reading log when you take a test. This is kept in my classroom.  Do NOT use your outside reading book during a test. This is considered cheating, and you will be disciplined according to the handbook.
