5 Statement of purpose: This bill proposes to authorize the Lake Champlain
6 quadricentennial commission to design, produce, purchase, distribute, and sell
7 commemorative Lake Champlain motor vehicle plates.
8 AN ACT RELATING TO LAKE CHAMPLAIN COMMEMORATIVE 9 MOTOR VEHICLE PLATES
10 It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:
11 Sec. 1. 23 V.S.A. § 515c is added to read:
12 § 515c. LAKE CHAMPLAIN QUADRICENTENNIAL
13 COMMEMORATIVE MOTOR VEHICLE PLATES
14 (a) Legislative intent. It is the intent of the general assembly to
15 commemorate the 400 years since the discovery of Lake Champlain in 1609.
16 In order to provide an appropriate tribute to the 400th anniversary, it is the
17 purpose of this section to allow the design, purchase, sale, and display of
18 commemorative motor vehicle plates.
19 (b) Authority. The Lake Champlain quadricentennial commission is
20 authorized to design, produce, purchase, distribute, and sell commemorative

2 not be produced, sold, distributed, or displayed which are not approved by the
3 commissioner of motor vehicles.
4 (c) Use. Residents of the state of Vermont may display one approved
5 commemorative plate on the front of a registered motor vehicle as provided in
6 this subsection. The commemorative plates shall not be used instead of regular
7 registration plates, nor are they required to be displayed on a motor vehicle.
8 The commemorative plate may be displayed on a motor vehicle registered as a
9 pleasure car and on trucks registered for less than 26,001 pounds and excluding
10 vehicles registered under the International Registration Plan, by covering the
11 front registration plate with the commemorative plate from July 1, 2008 until
12 June 30, 2010. The regular front registration plate shall not be removed. The
13 rear registration plate shall be in place and clearly visible at all times.
14 (d) Price. The retail price shall be established by the Lake Champlain
15 quadricentennial commission.
