<p> 1 BILL AS INTRODUCED S.342 2 2008 Page 1 3 4 1 S.342</p><p>2 Introduced by Committee on Transportation</p><p>3 Date: </p><p>4 Subject: Motor vehicles; commemorative plates; Lake Champlain plates </p><p>5 Statement of purpose: This bill proposes to authorize the Lake Champlain </p><p>6 quadricentennial commission to design, produce, purchase, distribute, and sell </p><p>7 commemorative Lake Champlain motor vehicle plates.</p><p>8 AN ACT RELATING TO LAKE CHAMPLAIN COMMEMORATIVE 9 MOTOR VEHICLE PLATES</p><p>10 It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont: </p><p>11 Sec. 1. 23 V.S.A. § 515c is added to read:</p><p>12 § 515c. LAKE CHAMPLAIN QUADRICENTENNIAL </p><p>13 COMMEMORATIVE MOTOR VEHICLE PLATES</p><p>14 (a) Legislative intent. It is the intent of the general assembly to </p><p>15 commemorate the 400 years since the discovery of Lake Champlain in 1609. </p><p>16 In order to provide an appropriate tribute to the 400th anniversary, it is the </p><p>17 purpose of this section to allow the design, purchase, sale, and display of </p><p>18 commemorative motor vehicle plates.</p><p>19 (b) Authority. The Lake Champlain quadricentennial commission is </p><p>20 authorized to design, produce, purchase, distribute, and sell commemorative </p><p>5 www.leg.state.vt.us 1 BILL AS INTRODUCED S.342 2 2008 Page 2 3 4 1 motor vehicle plates as described in subsection (a) of this section. Plates shall </p><p>2 not be produced, sold, distributed, or displayed which are not approved by the </p><p>3 commissioner of motor vehicles.</p><p>4 (c) Use. Residents of the state of Vermont may display one approved </p><p>5 commemorative plate on the front of a registered motor vehicle as provided in </p><p>6 this subsection. The commemorative plates shall not be used instead of regular</p><p>7 registration plates, nor are they required to be displayed on a motor vehicle. </p><p>8 The commemorative plate may be displayed on a motor vehicle registered as a </p><p>9 pleasure car and on trucks registered for less than 26,001 pounds and excluding</p><p>10 vehicles registered under the International Registration Plan, by covering the </p><p>11 front registration plate with the commemorative plate from July 1, 2008 until </p><p>12 June 30, 2010. The regular front registration plate shall not be removed. The </p><p>13 rear registration plate shall be in place and clearly visible at all times.</p><p>14 (d) Price. The retail price shall be established by the Lake Champlain </p><p>15 quadricentennial commission.</p><p>5 www.leg.state.vt.us</p>
