COURSE: NURSS 101 RN Transition Course

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This transition course is designed for students entering the LPN to RN bridge program. These students have already successfully completed an LPN certificate program and are licensed as practical nurses. This course will build on previous knowledge especially in the area of critical thinking and focus on the skills necessary to transition from the role of a Licensed Practical Nurse to the role of a Registered Nurse. Scope of practice issues will be explored in depth. The students will be introduced to concept mapping. The course prepares students to be successful in an LPN to RN transition program and to successfully pass the NCLEX-RN exam at completion. The course will be delivered in seminar on campus, web based instruction and independent study.

PREREQUISITES: Current unencumbered license as a Practical Nurse. Acceptance into the Registered Nurse Program at Renton Technical College.

COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this class, the student will be able to:  Define the role of the Licensed Practical Nurse  Define the role of the Registered Nurse  Differentiate between the role of the LPN and the RN  Discuss the role of the registered nurse in planning and managing care  Discuss the role of the registered nurse in collaborating with the consumer  Identify educational tools and skills need to be successful in the transition from LPN to RN  Develop critical thinking skills and integrate them into nursing practice

PLAGIARISM Any material taken word for word from another person’s work is considered plagiarized. Plagiarism is cheating and will result in a failing mark for the student’s work and probable expulsion from the program as determined by the Dean and college policies. All work and ideas obtained from another source must be cited as from that source. All papers must be in the student’s words and be justifiable by the student. The instructor may require the student to justify his or her work at the instructor’s discretion.

CODE OF CONDUCT

Academic Dishonesty/Classroom Conduct (cf WAC 495E-120-080) Any student who submits an assignment or other academic work to an instructor and falsely represents it as his or her own is guilty of academic dishonesty and is subject to discipline.

Cheating Cheating involves doing something that can deceptively or fraudulently misrepresent the student’s knowledge or ability in an academic or training exercise. It can also include the assisting of others during an exercise. Cheating is not tolerated at this institution. If a student is caught cheating, the student will be subject to discipline. For questions about cheating, ask an instructor.

Plagiarism In the United States, it is important to give credit to the other person or organization that originated an idea. This is referred to the ownership of ideas and requires that the student make appropriate citations. This means that if the student likes an idea that was originated by someone else, the student must give that person or organization credit for having had that idea. Plagiarism is not tolerated at this institution. If a student is caught plagiarizing, the student will be subject to discipline.

GRADING AND EVALUATION PROCEDURES

Students must pass this course with 80 % which is equivalent to a C.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Online Course Material Classroom Lecture & Discussion in Seminar Format Weekly Assignments

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT: Students will need access to a computer with internet access. All students must have a valid email address for communication.

SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENTS:

Lecture/Discussion: There will be 2 class sessions. The first will be held on August 6, 2009 on the broad topic of LPN to RN Transitions. This will be a focused lecture and discussion exploring the role transition from LPN to RN. Scope of Practice issues will be covered in depth as well as the differences between the LPN and RN role in the clinical setting. The second will cover the broad areas of critical thinking and concept mapping. Several case scenario examples will be reviewed and discussed.

Assignments: In addition to chapter assignments in the textbook, reading assignments will consist of professional articles specific to areas of content relevant to the course and will cover broad topics such as role transition, scope of practice issues, critical thinking skills, and concept mapping. Students are expected to come to class prepared to engage in discussion of material to be covered. This means reading the required articles prior to class sessions.

Transition Paper- Due: August 6, 2009 Write a 2-page paper on role transition from the LPN to RN role. This is a reflective paper not a research paper. Students are encouraged to explore their ideas on the role transition as they understand it and how it will affect their nursing practice. Support your views with reflections on your education and experiences in the healthcare field as nursing assistants and LPNs or other roles you have had in healthcare environments. Submit papers electronically to the instructor or in person at the class session.

Scope of Practice Research Paper- Due: August 13, 2009 Write a 3-4 page research paper differentiating the LPN and RN scope of nursing practice as well as differing nursing responsibilities within each role. Students are expected to utilize critical thinking skills in exploring, comparing and contrasting, and ultimately differentiating between practice levels. Include at least 3 references from professional journals. Use in-text citations. Use APA format. Title page and bibliography should be separate. Submit papers electronically to the instructor or in person at the class session.

Student Expectations and Responsibilities:

Students are expected to complete required assignments and readings on time and to participate in class discussions. Class attendance at both class sessions is essential and mandatory. Failure to attend may result in an unsatisfactory grade.

Students who have an issue with instruction or class management should follow appropriate procedures beginning with contacting the instructor with concerns. The instructor will handle concerns privately. If the instructor and student cannot resolve the issue, the instructor will assist the student in pursuing other avenues of recourse to resolve the issue.

The instructor reserves the right to change the syllabus or course schedule to meet the goals of the course or the needs of the students.
