2 1. INTRODUCTION

Refreshed Optima sedans join Kia model line-up

Since 2010, the Kia Optima mid-size sedan has been transforming the company’s market share in its segment – achieving a global total of 815,000 sales so far – while inspiring and challenging many consumers to consider a bold and dynamically-styled Kia for the first time.

Now, responding to customer feedback and developments in the ever-competitive automotive marketplace, Kia is introducing a ‘refreshed‘ Optima with an enhanced design, new infotainment, convenience and safety features, increased refinement, improved quality and a more premium finish.

“With the refreshed Kia Optima, our global design team has created a sedan with even more distinctive styling that stands apart from everything else in its segment,” comments Soon-Nam Lee, Vice President of Overseas Marketing, Kia Motors Corporation.

“The original Optima was very well-received when it was launched in overseas markets in 2010 and we are confident that the refreshed model, with its new range of high-tech features usually associated with premium brand vehicles, will greatly boost our presence in this sector in marketplaces all around the world,” adds Mr Lee.

Created under the direction of Kia’s Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer, the new-look Optima features new headlights, front grille, fog lamps, rear lights, bumpers and alloy wheels. At the front, the LED daytime running lights are moved from the bumper into the headlights – consistent with other Kia models – and the fog lamps are set into a sporty body-colour panel rather than the transverse black panel of the original design.

New optional four-point LED fog lamps generate a truly distinctive appearance and echo the dramatic appearance of the fog lamps fitted to the Kia pro_cee’d GT model in Europe, as well as the headlamps of the Kia Quoris flagship luxury sedan.

The refreshed Optima range receives three new 17-inch and 18-inch alloy wheel designs and a new sharper-edged trunk lid which reduces drag. At the rear, the new larger rear light clusters are available with surface-emitting LEDs, while the twin red reflectors set into the bumper are now raised and set on a horizontal plane. The surface-emitting LEDs echo Kia’s family look, as seen in other models like Cerato and Cadenza, and add luxurious elements to its design.

Customers keen to boost the visual impact of their vehicle still further can also specify a special optional ‘Sport Pack’, which comes with a black high-gloss honeycomb front grille, 3 chrome trim around the lower front air-intake, unique machine-finished 18-inch, five double-spoke alloy wheels and a matt-black diffuser beneath the rear bumper with twin tailpipes. Mechanical upgrades with the Sport Pack include larger diameter front disc brakes and high-performance dampers.

The new Optima’s key exterior and interior dimensions are unchanged. Its smooth contours enhance its aerodynamic efficiency and result in a drag figure of just Cd 0.29, minimising wind noise, while boosting performance and fuel economy at high speeds.

In Korea, the refreshed Optima is manufactured in a range of nine exterior colors. However, depending on local customers’ preferences the line-up of colors may vary in individual markets. The colors include six metallic and two pearl, plus the newly introduced Smoky Blue (metallic) paint finishes.

Global demand for the Optima sedan is supplied from Kia’s Hwa-Sung factory in Korea, while cars for the US and Chinese markets are manufactured in the USA and China.

*General Market For Kia’s global marketing program, General Market countries include the regions of Central and South America, the Caribbean, Asia (excluding China and Korea), the Pacific, Middle East and Africa

4 2. COMFORT & CONVENIENCE

Extra touches of luxury refresh the cabin

The driver-oriented interior design of the 2011 Optima is retained, with detailed changes to the instrument cluster, steering wheel, center stack, gear selector, door armrests and the seats – refreshing the cabin’s appearance and adding an extra touch of luxury.

Like the current model, the refreshed Optima’s cabin can be specified with beige two-tone, grey two-tone or black monotone Double Rachel cloth upholstery – depending on market - and a full leather interior is also available as an option on EX models.

All interior bright chrome accents are changed to satin chrome finish, while buyers of left- hand-drive Optima cars can also choose interior trim accents in black high gloss or light metal brush finishes.

The new Supervision Cluster features a larger TFT LCD screen (4.3-inch, up from 3.5- inch), delivering more information with improved graphics. The new three-spoke steering wheel, which has a flat bottom on models fitted with the automatic transmission, has a circular center boss and remote controls located on the horizontal spokes. This sporty looking steering wheel features those buttons that drivers are most likely to use and are positioned for ease of operation.

The new center stack houses a 7-inch or 8-inch information screen (depending on market) and is finished in black high-gloss, while the switch panels in the armrests come with satin metal or black high-gloss accents, depending on model. Interior door handles are now finished in satin metal, rather than chrome.

Front seats feature cushions with raised side bolsters and a higher leading edge, increasing lateral and under-thigh support for enhanced comfort. Ventilated front seats, heated front seats and heated rear seats – with both low and high temperature settings – are available, once again depending on market.

Driver and passengers will appreciate the higher levels of refinement in the refreshed Optima – one of the key areas for improvement targeted by Kia engineers. Measures adopted to reduce road noise in the new model include fitting a dynamic damper to the rear suspension cross member, changing the rear wheel arch covers to a BCF (bulked continuous filament) material for improved sound-proofing and fitting stronger alloy wheels. Combined, these measures have reduced road noise by up to 3.3 dB.

Further noise reducing modifications include the use of additional sealants in the dashboard bulkhead and fitting a cover to the man wiring junction box

5 3. INFOTAINMENT & DRIVING AIDS

Introducing new features and technologies

The already generous standard equipment of the original 2011 model is boosted by the introduction of additional standard and optional premium features for the refreshed Optima.

Drivers of automatic models can use Drive-Mode-Select to choose between three driving modes: the default Normal mode, Active ECO mode (which enhances fuel economy) and Sport mode, which delivers more immediate engine responses, holds each gear for longer and increases the weight of the steering.

Both the audio and navigation systems for the Optima have been improved. The new Gen 3.0A and Gen 3.0B audio systems now allow customers to connect an iPod to the car via Apple’s regular USB cable. The Gen 3.0A is equivalent the the current model’s standard audio system. The Gen3.0B replaces the current 6-CDC head unit with a 4.3- inch TFT LCD screen for the rearview camera and features a premium Infinity sound system.

The interior of the upgraded Optima, featuring satellite navigation, has been refreshed with a larger screen and more functions (not available in right-hand drive markets). The new navigation system, which features a 7-inch screen, is available on models in Europe (for LHD and RHD markets) and Australia. An 8-inch screen (AVN 3.0 or AVN 4.0 system) can also be ordered in Europe (for LHD) and the Middle East.

As an option, Kia’s Blind Spot Detection system is available. As well as alerting the driver to motorcycles and cars approaching closely – by triggering a warning light in the door mirror – the BSD system incorporates Lane Change Assist (LCA) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).

Operational at speeds from 15-to-250 kph, LCA monitors following traffic up to 70 meters behind and alerts the driver if changing lane might be hazardous. Designed to improve safety in car parks, RCTA is activated when reverse gear is selected and monitors the zone at 90 degrees to the car, on both sides up to 20 meters away, sounding a warning if approaching vehicles are detected. Both front and rear parking sensors are available.

6 4. ENGINES & TRANSMISSIONS

High performance and low emissions from upgraded powertrain

The refreshed Optima is available in General Markets and the Middle East with a choice of four-cylinder gasoline engines carried over from the previous model, 2.4-liter and 2.0- liter MPI units. In five other countries (see below) Optima is powered by GDI (gasoline direct injection) engines of a similar capacity.

A number of measures designed to enhance engine efficiency have been adopted for the new Optima, including an overrunning alternator decoupler and an innovative battery management system. The result is highly competitive CO2 emissions for its class.

The 2.4-liter MPI engine is the proven and popular Theta 2 unit which produces 180 ps @ 6,000 rpm and 231 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. With this engine, the Optima can accelerate to 100 kph in 9.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 210 kph.

The 2.0-liter MPI powerplant is a ‘Nu’ lightweight engine which generates 162 ps @ 6,500 rpm and 194 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm. With this engine new Optima accelerates to 100 kph in 11.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 202 kph.

Another 2.0-liter MPI engine, ‘Nu’, based on CVVL technology is also available in some countries, generating 165 ps @ 6,500 rpm and 196 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm.

To increase engine efficiency, Kia’s engineers specified a two-stage variable induction system, an electronic throttle body, an off-set crankshaft and Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) for both Optima engines.

Both engines are offered with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions, with high top-gear ratios providing greater refinement and efficiency while cruising at higher speeds.

For the Australian and South African markets, the Kia Optima is powered by a Theta 2, 2.4-liter GDI engine generating 201 ps @ 6,300 rpm and 250 Nm @ 4,250 rpm.

Exclusively for the UAE, Oman and Egyptian markets, Optima comes with a turbo- charged Theta 2, 2.0-liter GDI powerunit developing 271 ps @ 6,000 rpm and 365 Nm at 1,650-4,500 rpm.
