As we watch four little girls skip down the steps of their church in 1963 Birmingham, AL, discussing Coretta Scott King’s fashion, we are stunned by the sudden blast that rips through the walls and tears apart both their little bodies and the last shreds of humanity left in Civil Rights-era South. That these girls are immortalized in Ava DuVernay’s film Selma, poems, and texts of fiction and non-fiction demonstrates the heinousness of this act; however, they cannot answer the unanswerable question of how such a person or persons could create an act that was, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. condemned as “one of the most vicious and tragic crimes ever perpetrated against humanity” (Kraijiack). Most sadly, this has not an isolated incident of crime against innocent children; in fact, our history is rife with examples of children targeted as victims to send messages are part of seemingly endless political, diplomatic, or personal agendas. Recently, in 2014 American society saw this conflict played out on the borders between the southern states contiguous to Mexico, as a sharp increase in the influx of immigrants attempted to cross the border. However, these immigrants were unique, in that they were children, some as young as 4 years old, sent northward by families in far off lands in hopes of a better life than their current ones filled with violence, poverty, and instability. However, these children were gathered at the border like livestock, detained, and eventually send back to their countries. Although some may argue that these children’s desperate entrances into this country without their parents marks them as “illegal immigrants” and therefore subject to the consequences of those who defy the law, the United States of American has a duty to welcome and shelter to those who Research Paper Introduction Template Name ,1

cannot support nor shelter their selves, and it is unconscionable and unethical to refuse an immigrant child entrance into this country.
