In 1994, Union’s leadership class envisioned student-athletes taking to the field through something other than a paper sign. Todd Koch and Tony Layne had built
a two-person TeePee as Boy Scouts and brought the design to the class. It was
there, behind Tony’s artistic design, that the TeePee was born. After much
convincing, a company named Kerr that manufactures sailboats made Union its
first-ever TeePee. Tony airbrushed and painted the TeePee, which mirrors the
design you see today. Daniel Leung and Brad Ruttman joined Todd and Tony as
Union’s first TeePee set-up crew and throughout the first year, the four of them
set up the TeePee by themselves. The TeePee has been a tradition at every
football game and has not missed a single game in more than 23 years, traveling
to California, New Mexico, Ohio, Louisiana and Texas on multiple occasions. It
has also been a fixture at home basketball games and senior night activities for
many other sports. For their contributions to Union Athletics and the legacy of
the TeePee, we are honored to induct Todd, Tony, Daniel and Brad into the
Union Hall of Fame. Todd Koch Contributions to Athletics Original TeePee Crew
Named Mr. Union in 1995 and a four-year member of Union’s Renegade

of Theology in 2010 where he received the Kenneth Echols Price for Excellence
in Preaching award. Todd will graduate from George Washington University in
2018 with a dual Physician Assistant and Master of Public Health degree.
One of Todd’s favorite high school memories was most likely “illegally” cutting
down the trees for the first teepee poles from a housing development still under
construction while driving his parents’ minivan with his brother and other crew
members. He also remembers the 1995 Boys’ State Soccer Championship and
the convoy they led to cheer on the team to victory. Tony Layne Contributions to Athletics Original TeePee Crew
The architect behind the design of the TeePee, Tony was on the Student Council
Board in high school where he helped coordinate the National Student Council
Conference hosted by Union his senior year. Graduating first in his class with a

joined the Minneapolis studio of global design firm Perkins+Will as an intern architect. There he worked through the ranks, serving for five years as the Global
