Awards Criteria Nominations due November 24, 2009 Regional nominations for Social Worker of the Year are due November 9, 2009. The statewide Social Worker of the Year will be selected from the regional nominations only.

Awards nominations are being sought for five award categories - Social Worker of the Year, Public Citizen of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Stabenow Political Leadership Award, and the Lisa Putnam Award for Excellence in Child Welfare. Award winners will be honored at the Annual Conference on April 8 & 9, 2010 in Dearborn.

Social Worker of the Year Accepting REGIONAL nominations only this year - deadline is November 9th. Please contact your regional Board Representative to alert them that you would like to nominate someone. All regional awardees will be honored at the Annual Conference in April. Nominees must make a demonstrable difference in such areas as advocacy for clients, social policy, social work practice, program development, administration, and research.

 Must demonstrate outstanding leadership  Contribute to a positive image for the social work profession  Take risks to achieve outstanding results  Is a NASW member in good standing

NOMINATION PROCEDURE – Submit a copy of the following: 1 - Completed official nomination form 2 - One page summary that describes –  What the social worker has accomplished  What risks the social worker took to achieve results  Who the beneficiaries were 3 - Curriculum vita/resume 4 - Three letters of support 5 - Recent black and white digital photograph in jpg or eps format at least 2 x 2 inches in size

Public Citizen of the Year Nominee makes a significant contribution to an area or population of concern to the social work profession such as at-risk or vulnerable populations, quality of life in communities, and social issues.

 Acts with courage  Demonstrates outstanding leadership  Exemplifies social work values and ethics

NOMINATION PROCEDURE – Submit a copy of the following: 1 - Completed official nomination form 2 - One-page summary that describes –  What the nominee accomplished  What the consequences were  Who the beneficiaries were  How the nominee’s accomplishments relate to social work 3 - Curriculum vita/resume 4 - Three letters of support 5 - Recent black and white digital photograph in jpg or eps format at least 2 x 2 inches in size

Lifetime Achievement Award Nominee demonstrates repeated outstanding achievements, as well as recognition beyond the social work profession, contributions of lasting impact, and outstanding creativity.

 Must meet all criteria for Social Worker of the Year  Is a NASW member in good standing

Stabenow Political Leadership Award Nominee demonstrates outstanding service and contributions, exhibits exceptional political leadership over the course of her/his social work career and uses these skills to effect social policy that exemplifies social work ethics and values. May have run for office on the local/state/federal level or be an elected official serving, at the time of nomination, in public office.

 Make a significant contribution to public service while in office  Demonstrate leadership in advancing public policy in the area of vulnerable populations, civil and human rights, or social welfare  Demonstrate leadership on behalf of the protection and advancement of social work practice  Is a NASW member in good standing

NOMINATION PROCEDURE – Submit a copy of the following: 1 - Completed official nomination form 2 - One-page summary that describes –  Nature of leadership demonstrated on issues of concern to the social work profession,  Short and long-term effect of his or her leadership  How the social work profession and those served are affected 3 - Curriculum vita/resume 4 - Three letters of support 5 - Recent black and white digital photograph in jpg or eps format at least 2 x 2 inches in size

Lisa Putnam Award for Excellence in Child Welfare Nominee demonstrates excellence in the practice of social work in child welfare by such actions as educating others on the needs of children and families, developing innovative programs to benefit children and their families, and contributing to improved quality of life for children in the community.

 Has the support of supervisor or agency director  Exemplifies social work values and ethics  Is a NASW member in good standing
