KOINONIA BIBLE INSTITUTE – Winter/Spring 2012 (February 21st – May 9th)

PURPOSE: The purpose of the Koinonia Bible Institute is to glorify God through developing, coordinating, and implementing a structured Bible-centered curriculum where each student will concentrate on specific subjects for a period of 12 weeks (2 Tim. 2:15, 2 Peter 3:18, Ephes. 4:11, 12).

“The Place to Go For Those Who Want To Know and Grow”

OBJECTIVES: Classes will assist students in:

 Developing competency and knowledge of the doctrines of the Bible;

 Developing a mature relationship with God through prayer, study of scriptures and meditation;

 Developing spiritual enthusiasm and zeal for communicating the Word of God to others; and

 Developing a sense of purpose and to set out to put God’s Word in action by helping one or more of the following: the poor, broken hearted, blind, bruised, and/or the captives.

REGISTRATION AND COST INFORMATION: Registration will begin on Friday, February 10th via the Internet. Paper packets will also be available on Friday, February 10th in the administrative office for those who do not have Internet access. Completed registration forms can be transmitted at any time (up to midnight on Sunday, February 19th) via the Internet or downloaded and given to Sister Carolyn Alston on any given Sunday after 8:00 am or 11:00 am services in the administrative office. Forms may also be emailed to Sister Alston at [email protected]. You may also fax your registration during the week to Sister Renee Wells at 301- 431-1595. Early registration will ensure availability of your desired class. Classes with less than 5 students are subject to cancellation. Please select up to three classes (1st, 2nd, 3rd choice) in case your first choice is unavailable.

Registration for non-MJBC members is $25. The cost of books for a class is the student’s responsibility. Students 17 years of age and younger must be registered by their parent(s) prior to attending class. Students cannot be registered without the last four digits of their social security number. All students, including children, are asked to come to class with their Bibles, pen/pencil, paper, and a willingness to learn. Classes are filled on a first-come-first-served basis. All classes provided through Mount Jezreel’s Koinonia Bible Institute will be based on Christian principles and the Baptist doctrine. Students may, therefore, be required to join in prayer, remember and recite scriptures, and/or perform other assignments related to “Christian Biblical Teachings.”

-2- CLASS SCHEDULES AND OFFERINGS: Classes for this session will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On Tuesday there will be a general prayer and praise service in the Sanctuary between 6:45 pm and 7:15 pm. Immediately after, students will report to their respective classes for the remainder of the evening session. A light dinner will be served free of charge from 6:00 pm - 6:40 pm for those attending Tuesday night classes. The Wednesday class will be taught from 12:00 noon –1:00 pm.

All classes will begin and end promptly. For parents that have children in Tuesday classes, please leave your classes promptly at 9:00 pm to pick up your children. Classes offered this session, with instructors, are as follows:

Tuesday Classes (February 21 nd – May 8 th )

† Experiencing God (ST 925): Course Description: Do you want to know the will of God? What does He want you to do and focus on in your Life? Do you see His will as Hidden? Mysterious? Undeterminable? This class will guide the student to experience the kind of relationship with God through which they come to know and do His will. Through examination of biblical and contemporary illustrations, participants will understand how God desires and inspires a close, interactive fellowship with Him. †Survey of the New Testament, Part II (BE102): Course Description: During this 12 week session, we will continue our journey through the New Testament (beginning with the book of Philippians). For each book, we will look at the book’s purpose, key Bible verses; people; main topics and events; and the author. This course is an exciting journey into Christian knowledge and growth for both the student and the instructor. Textbook: Journey of a Lifetime by Tommy Higle and the Holy Bible (King James Version, New King James Version, or New International Version. Instructor: DIT Alfreda White

†Theology of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (TH 201): Course Description: This course is designed to treat Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a theologian, evaluating his understanding of the Christian doctrine and his contribution to Christian ethics. The course will explore Dr. King’s theology from his words and voice, understand the theological, philosophical, and religious sources that influenced King’s theology, ethics, and social activism, and understand the concept of beloved community in King’s system of theology. Textbook: A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr. by James Melvin Washington and Martin Luther King Jr. and the Holy Bible Instructors: Minister Pertina Scott and Sister Libbie Love

†Foundation of Prayer (FS 210):

-3- Course Description: This class will teach biblical based lessons on prayer. The students will learn how to maintain a prayer life and how pray effectively and in agreement with the Word of God. This course for example will teach on some of the hindrances in prayer life such as, unforgiveness or a lack of consistency. We also will explore how to incorporate difference spiritual components such as, praise, faith, worship, and praying scriptures are vital in prayer. At the end of the course we hope students will have a personal prayer life that is more effective and fruitful. †Containers of Power: Words—God’s Word (ST 310): Course Descriptions: This course will highlight the importance of words, explaining how Almighty God works through the power of the spoken word, saturated in faith. In addition, this course will emphasize the importance in establishing, on the earth, the Word of God in one’s life in order to experience the wonderful, covenantal promises of God. Textbook: The Tongue: A Creative Force by Charles Capps Instructor: Sister Mary Colbert

†James: Spiritual Maturity (BE 262): Course Description: The epistle of James discusses many problems in our world including trials, temptations, and worldliness. All of these problems have a common cause: spiritual immaturity. In this epistle, James tells us what we are to do to become spiritually mature. The study of James will help us as we begin by examining our own hearts and move forward to follow Jesus. James prefers actions over words. This course is a study of how to grow in faith and how to depend on Christ. Textbooks: Holy Bible, Be Mature (James): Growing Up in Christ by Warren Wiersbe The Wiersbe Bible Study Series: James-Growing Up in Christ by Warren Wiersbe (These are two 2 separate books-both are required) Instructors: Rev. † Marriage Preparation Class (MP 310): The Marriage Preparation Class is for engaged couples or those couples contemplating engagement. The class is MANDATORY for all couples planning to be married at Mt. Jezreel Baptist Church. The fee for the class is $50 for members and $100 for non-members, which covers all course materials and assessment tools. Instructors: Mrs. Sandy Fennell and MIT and Mrs. Porter Davis

† Growing Up Just like Jesus - Ages 3-5 (EC 113): Course Description: A child friendly course which encourages children to love one another and to make Godly choices from an early age. Designed to reinforce the teachings of their parents and always have Godly thoughts and actions. Instructors: DIT Barbara McKinney/Sis. Dionne Hamilton/Trustee Carolyn Alston

† Show and Tell - Ages 6-10 (CH 119):

-4- Course Description: Students will focus on showing Christ-like behavior and telling others about the good news of Jesus Christ. Through a series of interactive, hands-on activities, students will practice locating specific scriptures, memorizing verses and developing ways to apply Christian principles to their lives. Textbook: Holy Bible Instructor: Sister Angela P. Ford

† Real Teen Talk for Christian Success - Ages 11-13 – (TN 126): Course Description: Success for Teens will show you that success is not about smarts, looks or luck. It’s about becoming the best possible person you can be and making the most of your talents and opportunities. By understanding and applying the slight edge philosophy, you'll learn the time-tested principles for excelling in areas of your life by creating a philosophy of action and attitude, discovering what matters most in life and dealing with challenges and obstacles. You will learn new ways of thinking so you can make the wisest choices at home, school or with your friends while maintaining your Christian virtues. Textbook: Success for Teens: Real Teens Talk about Using the Slight Edge Instructors: Sister Chasity Robinson and Brother William Robinson

†Strategies for Personal Time with God - Ages: 14-18 – (TN 226): Course Description: There are many obstacles that prohibit people from developing personal Bible study practices. Those obstacles include (1) busyness, (2) crowds, (3) noise, (4) hurry, (5), worry and (6) things The goal of the course is to help the participants develop methods for studying the Bible on their own by reading, reflecting and journaling their experiences as it relates to the scripture passages. Each participant is challenged to “launch out into the deep” for a new and deeper relationship with God (Luke 5:4). Instructors: Min. Khalida Burton and Sister Stacey Coleman

-5- CREDIT/AUDIT POLICY: Classes taught at the Bible Institute can be taken for credit (to be used toward graduation) or audit (not for credit or graduation).

Students shall attend 80% of all classes to receive credit for the course taken. Special approval may be provided to miss more classes by the instructor(s) prior to absences. If not approved in advance, students who miss more classes will not receive credit. These students may switch from taking the class for credit to audit. Courses audited can be repeated to obtain credit.

Students who do not wish to take classes for credit, may audit them by checking the box marked “Audit.” If this box is not checked, it will be assumed that the student is taking the class for credit. These students auditing classes are, however, still required to complete a registration form and pay the registration fee(s).

Please Note: Students arriving to class late by 15 minutes or more are considered absent.

COURSE NUMBERING SYSTEM/CREDIT DESIGNATION

The Institute uses a two-letter prefix to identify the subject area and the three-digit number to identify courses according to the following system:

GRADUATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To be eligible for graduation from the Koinonia Bible Institute one must meet the following requirements: 3 basic courses (100 level courses) which are 1 credit each 2 intermediate courses (200 level courses) which are 2 credits each 1 advanced topic credit (300 level course) 3 credits each 2 special topic credits (100 level courses or special topic classes, i.e., orientation)

Basic Credits 3 classes x 1 credit = 3 credits Intermediate Credits 2 classes x 2 credits = 4 credits Advanced Credits 1 class x 3 credits = 3 credits *Special Topics 2 classes x 1 credit = 2 credits

Total 12 credits

Special topic classes are those classes taught over the summer and/or holidays. Most of these classes are less than 12 weeks. The orientation class is a special topic class that is equivalent to one credit. Students may also take a two- credit class to fulfill their special topics credits.

Please note: Discipleship, Survey of the Old Testament, and Survey of the New Testament are mandatory classes for graduation.
