Parallelism Parallelism: Writing with parallelism involves using similar sentence structures to express ideas that are similar in content. You can use parallelism to balance or contrast related ideas.

Not Parallel: The doctor saw the boy, named the illness, and she gave a pill. Parallel: The doctor saw the boy, named the illness, and gave a pill.

Not Parallel: She asked where the fire was and the cause of it. Parallel: She asked where the fire was and what caused it.

Practice. Rewrite each of the following sentences so that related ideas are expressed in similar or parallel structures.

1. The vegetables can be boiled, baked, steamed, or you can eat them raw.

2. Using resourcefulness and a neighbor lent him a ladder, Tom rescued the kitten from the tree.

3. George’s favorite pastimes are swimming, jogging, and to play basketball.

4. You will gain weight if you increase your caloric intake and your exercise is decreased.

5. 5. After the lightning and before it thundered, we had four seconds of silence.

Quote Integration Rule 4: When quoting passages already in quotation marks (dialogue) replace the double quotations with single quotation marks (apostrophe key) and then put the entire passage within double quotes.

Example: Upon his death, Arcite declares his eternal devotion to Emily and promises “’To you, O lady that I love the most;/But I bequesth the service of my ghost’” (lines 1917-1918).

Example: After continuing to mourn Arcite for over a year, Theseus chastises Palamon and Emily by saying that their excessive sadness is”’offending so against [Arcite], they [also] offend/Themselves, and are not happier in the end” (lines 2217-2218).
