CHICAGO — The University of Chicago Presents, the University’s professional music presenting organization, enhances its diverse concert series with a schedule of related events, including lectures by renowned scholars, talks with internationally acclaimed musicians and composers, a lecture demonstration, and a sound installation. Pre-concert events have been added to all concert series. The Jazz at the Logan series, in partnership with the Jazz Institute of Chicago, offers expanded programming with “Chicago Stage at the Logan,” a free, pre-concert performance series by local jazz musicians. A listening session on May 16, 2018, in partnership with Hyde Park Jazz Festival, reveals insights into the drummer Brian Blade. All event details are below. Single tickets are on sale beginning August 21, with a 20% discount through September 30.

Newly added events complementing the season-exclusive György Ligeti Series: On Saturday, October 21, Arditti Quartet hosts a special open session and discussion of their career at the forefront of contemporary music, including their work with György Ligeti (1923-2006), one of the most important composers of 20th century music. Pianist Pierre- Laurent Aimard offers a lecture-demonstration on Monday, March 5, before his recital on Tuesday, March 6. From March 5-8, the University hosts “Ligeti in Context: the Witches’ Kitchen at the WDR Electronic Studio,” a sound installation that provides modern commentary on the Westdeutscher Rundfunk Electronic Music Studio in Cologne, where composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Gottfried Michael Koenig, and György Ligeti gathered in the early days of the development of groundbreaking electronic music. A scholarly conference (“Dislocations: Reassessing Ligeti”) hosted by the Department of Music will also take place March 7-8.

UChicago Presents also announces personnel changes and additions. Jazz pianist Craig Taborn will perform on the Contempo-Jazz Double Bill in place of the eminent Geri Allen, who passed away earlier this summer. Chicago-based folk guitarist and vocalist Robbie Fulks joins jazz clarinetist Anat Cohen to open Jazz at the Logan’s fifth season on Saturday, October 7. This event is also part of the Logan Center Five Year Bash.
