Lizard

Lizards can break off their tails if they are caught by another animal. The tail will re-grow.

Habitat – Lizards are found all around the world apart from the polar regions. Most live in or on the ground. Only a few live in the water. Lizards like to sun themselves to raise their body temperature.

Size – Lizards vary in size from under 7.5 cm to over 3 metres.

Appearance – There are many types of lizards. Ground and tree living lizards are usually brightly coloured. They have long tails usually four legs with long fingers.

Diet – Lizards are omnivores (meat and plant eaters). They eat fruit, insects and small animals.

Young - Most female lizards lay soft shelled eggs. A few lizards give birth to live young.

Interesting fact – There are over 2500 types of lizard. Only two are poisonous.
