  • Immortal Words: the Language and Style of the Contemporary Italian Undead-Romance Novel
Immortal Words: the Language and Style of the Contemporary Italian Undead-Romance Novel by Christina Vani A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Italian Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Christina Vani 2018 Immortal Words: the Language and Style of the Contemporary Italian Undead-Romance Novel Christina Vani Doctor of Philosophy Department of Italian Studies University of Toronto 2018 Abstract This thesis explores the language and style of six “undead romances” by four contemporary Italian women authors. I begin by defining the undead romance, trace its roots across horror and romance genres, and examine the subgenres under the horror-romance umbrella. The Trilogia di Mirta-Luna by Chiara Palazzolo features a 19-year-old sentient zombie as the protagonist: upon waking from death, Mirta-Luna searches the Subasio region for her love… but also for human flesh. These novels present a unique interpretation of the contemporary “vampire romance” subgenre, as they employ a style influenced by Palazzolo’s American and British literary idols, including Cormac McCarthy’s dialogic style, but they also contain significant lexical traces of the Cannibali and their contemporaries. The final three works from the A cena col vampiro series are Moonlight rainbow by Violet Folgorata, Raining stars by Michaela Dooley, and Porcaccia, un vampiro! by Giusy De Nicolo. The first two are fan-fiction works inspired by Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga, while the last is an original queer vampire romance. These novels exhibit linguistic and stylistic traits in stark contrast with the Trilogia’s, though Porcaccia has more in common with Mirta-Luna than first meets the eye.

  • I SOUTHERN MONSTERS in SOUTHERN SPACES
i SOUTHERN MONSTERS IN SOUTHERN SPACES: TRANSNATIONAL ENGAGEMENTS IN CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION by CHRISTEN ELIZABETH HAMMOCK (Under the Direction of JOHN LOWE) ABSTRACT Vampires, zombies, and other monsters have long been written about as a narrative space to work through collective anxieties, and the latest incarnation of these paranormal stories is no exception. What is remarkable is that many of these stories have adopted a Southern setting to explore Otherness. In this thesis, I seek to explore the role that Southern milieus plays in three television shows: The Walking Dead, True Blood, and Dexter. These shows are deeply invested in the culture and history of different “Souths,” ranging from the “Old South” of rural Georgia to a new, transnational South in Miami, Florida. I argue that this trend stems from the South’s hybrid existence as both colonizer and colonized, master and slave, and that a nuanced engagement with various Souths presents a narrative space of potential healing and rehabilitation. • Playing Grown Up, He Was Still Responsible Enough to Oversee His Business
A kjwrit fanfiction Wealthy, a playboy, and a genius to boot, Eric Northman lives his life without regret and without apology. But when his own life hangs in the balance, it’ll take more than his own ingenuity to save himself. Namely, his Executive Assistant, Sookie Stackhouse. All human…to start. Rated M/AU Chapter 1 – It Ain’t Easy Being Green SPOV “Good morning Godric,” I called out into the room, while I set our daily Starbucks intake down onto the table just inside the front door. His soft spoken melodic voice filled the room as he greeted, “Good morning Miss Stackhouse. I trust you had a good evening?” His cadence could lead one to believe English was his second language, which – technically – it was. But that made no difference to me and I loved how polite he was. It was a trait that had somehow bypassed his maker. And it was a good thing they weren’t so alike. I couldn’t handle two of them. Godric’s name alone was a testament to his maker’s narcissism. When I’d had the misfortune of asking Eric why he’d chosen a name that sounded like something born out of the first century – rather than the twenty-first – I learned sometimes it was better to not always know every little detail. God plus Eric equaled Godric. And it wasn’t even because Eric thought himself the modern day Almighty or second coming of Christ. He named Godric – the artificial intelligence life form that was wired all throughout the house – after the mangled words his dates (and I used the term loosely, just like moral codes of said dates) shouted whenever he entertained them.

THE VAULT an Anthology of Student Writing The Writing Program at SUNY Sullivan The Vault—2014—Volume 6 The Vault an Anthology of Student Writing Presented by the Writing Program of SUNY Sullivan Volume 6 • Fall 2014 Vault • Volume 6 • Fall 2014 1 Preface The Vault Overview: The Writing Program publishes an anthology of student writing each academic year. The anthology—called The Vault —showcases exceptional writing created in our courses, offers models for current students, and creates a potential teaching tool for instructors. The writings come from a combination of Writing Program courses (Basic English, Composition I, Composition II) and Creative Writing courses (Creative Writing, Creative Nonfiction), and on occasion we receive exceptional essays from other classes. The Editorial Committee selects the pieces for publication. Procedures: Instructors choose worthy essays, poems, or stories from their classes and, with the permission of the student, submit them for consideration to the Editorial Committee. Instructors must note that offering or refusing to offer submissions will not affect a student’s grade in a course. To submit student work for possible publication in The Vault , students and instructors should follow these steps: • Instructors should select exceptional pieces of writing and ask students to revise, if necessary, prior to submission • Students must complete a Permission Form • Students should send an electronic copy of the final draft to the instructor, Lynne Crockett, or Cindy Linden. First drafts also are appreciated. (NOTE: We no longer will scan paper copies; the essays must be submitted electronically.) • State Law & State Taxation Corner
November–December 2011 State Law & State Taxation Corner By Thomas E. Rutledge Vampires and the Law of Business Organizations: The Fruitless Search for Authenticity eyond agreement that they are “undead” and survive on a diet of blood, vampires are in- Bdefi nite creatures. Some must sleep during the daylight hours, others may be awake so long as they do not come into contact with sunlight and others do not sleep at all.1 Some vampires, upon exposure to sunlight, will combust while others are not so sensitive, either being weakened or simply refl ecting the light as if from jewels in their skin.2 For some, only the blood of humans will suffi ce, while others may subsist on other than human blood or even on synthetic “True Blood.”3 While for some vampires garlic is a barrier, to others it is “irritating.”4 A crucifi x is a weapon against some vampires while others enjoy them.5 Some vampires can squeeze through small spaces while others cannot.6 Certain vampires have characteristics that are not, in the context of other vampires, mentioned.7 There is no set defi nition of the characteristics of a vampire; rather, what is a “vampire” is defi ned within a particular construct of a particular author. None of those constructs is more correct or more authentic than is any other—there is no “real” vampire against which to make any comparison of authenticity. The law of business organizations has much in com- mon with vampires; there are numerous characteristics that may or may not be embodied in a particular form, each of which should be understood to be a construct.8 Some structures provide the owners limited liability from venture debts and obligations, while others do not.9 In some forms management is coincident with ownership, while in others they are distinct.10 While in Thomas E.

The two guiding emotions are particularly closely intertwined in the many contemporary vampire narratives which are based in the romance genre rather than in traditional horror. The intermingling of the emotions occurs on two levels: inside and outside the text itself. Focusing on the latter ―the reader, viewer and listener’s affects ―Jeffrey Cohen argues that the “escapist fantasies” the monster provides as well as the “fantasies of aggression, domination and inversion are allowed safe expression in a clearly delimited and permanently liminal space” (1996: 17). This space, then, is figured not as the monster itself, but as the audience’s temporary experience. Significantly, many discussions about vampire texts follow in this vein, with focus on what the monster represents to the listener, reader or viewer and seeing the experience of the text itself as a site of emotional meaning.
