Engle Chairperson Julie Gelfand Kathleen McGill Jennie O’Keefe Joyce Thomas JULY 2012 I 1 DGA Annual Meetings in Los Angeles and New York DGA President Taylor Hackford delivers the State-of-the-Guild address in New York The DGA held its annual membership meetings at Guild headquarters in Los Angeles on Wednesday, May 16, and at the DGA New York Theater on Wednesday, May 23. DGA President Taylor Hackford presided over both meetings. “Our Guild is a vibrant membership organization, 15,000 strong, that works to protect and enforce your economic and creative rights no matter what challenges come our way,” said Hackford. “Whether at the bargaining table or through Guild organizing, our DGA Leadership, in partnership with our excellent professional staff, have tackled many thorny negotiations, and each time we have been confronted by a new genre, means of distribution or technological advancement, this Guild has negotiated gains for our membership. “Our major contracts aren’t set to expire until June 30, 2014 – but the DGA prides itself on being forward-thinking about our contracts – not just in the sense of protecting our members in the immediate future, but in recognizing industry change and addressing it promptly and appropriately.” National Executive Director Jay D. He also covered a variety of other subjects including the constant battle to protect creative rights, the revenue-generating possibilities of New Media, legislative efforts to extend production incentive programs, the success of last year’s 75th Anniversary celebrations, and the upcoming changes to DGA Awards policies such as the switch to online voting and the decision to allow studios and distributors to send “for your consideration” screeners to DGA members for the fi rst time ever.     MICHAEL ALLAN ZINBERG SUMMER 2014 Michael Zinberg is a Director, Writer and Producer of prime-time television dramas, comedies and movies. Moving to Los Angeles in the summer of 1968, he began his award-winning career as an usher at CBS-Television City, and as a writer and production assistant. He soon became Associate Producer of NICHOLS, starring James Garner. He then joined the Mary Tyler Moore (MTM) Company (72), where he wrote, produced and directed The Bob Newhart Show (Six Seasons) and worked on MTM’s other series, including the Mary Tyler Moore Show. From MTM he took his first turn at NBC as VP Program Development (79-81), bringing Hill Street Blues, and Cheers to air. Later, as President NBC-P (93-95), he supervised Homicide, JAG and all NBC Late Night programming. His time at the Network gave him unique insight as a Writer and Creator-Producer, but he always saw himself primarily a Director. His Directing career includes shows in every format, many of which he wrote and produced. Among them, Newhart, WKRP in Cincinnati, Family Ties, Taxi, The Yellow Rose, Til I Kissed Ya (MOW), Cold Steel & Neon, The Practice, Everybody Loves Raymond, Midnight Caller, Gilmore Girls, NCIS, LOST, Rizzoli & Isles, Private Practice, The Unit, Lie To Me, NCIS New Orleans, The Michael Fox Show, The Blacklist and The Good Wife. He received the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing in Television Drama for the Viet Nam Trilogy of QUANTUM LEAP, a series he also Executive Produced.
