DGA President Taylor Hackford delivers the State-of-the-Guild address in New York The DGA held its annual membership meetings at Guild headquarters in Los Angeles on Wednesday, May 16, and at the DGA New York Theater on Wednesday, May 23. DGA President Taylor Hackford presided over both meetings.

“Our Guild is a vibrant membership organization, 15,000 strong, that works to protect and enforce your economic and creative rights no matter what challenges come our way,” said Hackford. “Whether at the bargaining table or through Guild organizing, our DGA Leadership, in partnership with our excellent professional staff, have tackled many thorny negotiations, and each time we have been confronted by a new genre, means of distribution or technological advancement, this Guild has negotiated gains for our membership. “Our major contracts aren’t set to expire until June 30, 2014 – but the DGA prides itself on being forward-thinking about our contracts – not just in the sense of protecting our members in the immediate future, but in recognizing industry change and addressing it promptly and appropriately.”

Hackford went on to detail the early preparations for the upcoming negotiations cycle and encouraged the membership to contact their councils and Guild executives about their ideas and priorities. He also covered a variety of other subjects including the constant battle to protect creative rights, the revenue-generating possibilities of New Media, legislative efforts to extend production incentive programs, the success of last year’s 75th Anniversary celebrations, and the upcoming changes to DGA Awards policies such as the switch to online voting and the decision to allow studios and distributors to send “for your consideration” screeners to DGA members for the fi rst time ever. He also urged members to log-on to the redesigned DGA website and take advantage of the online services, acknowledged the hard work of the Guild’s councils and committees, and the work of the DGA’s professionals. - continued on page 4 President Hackford at the Los Angeles meeting

The San Francisco Coordinating Committee (SFCC) welcomed DGA members from all categories to their Annual General Membership Meeting and Reception on May 12 at San Francisco’s Concordia-Argonaut Club. SFCC Chair Debbie Brubaker welcomed special guest DGA President Taylor Hackford, who spoke about a number of subjects including: plans for the next negotiations cycle in 2013, the current status of New Media, and recent successes in California Production Incentives such as the recent project Hemingway & Gellhorn that took advantage of the program earlier this year and employed Bay Area DGA members. Assistant Executive Director Lisa Layer followed Hackford with a review of the May National Board meeting and how that will affect local members. Brubaker also gave reports on the Committee’s educational activities and plans for the upcoming Annual Networking Mixer on October 18, and SFCC Treasurer Gino Caputi gave the treasury report. DGA Supports Bipartisan Effort to Extend Federal Tax Incentive Legislation On May 18, the DGA issued the following statement in support of the introduction of legislation to extend Section 181, a federal tax provision which prevents fi lm and television production from migrating overseas. “In 2001, the Directors Guild of America brought the problem of runaway fi lm and television production to Congressman Howard Berman (D-CA). At the time, the entertainment industry was hard-hit by productions moving overseas to take advantage of tax incentives. Congressman Berman, recognizing the impact on our industry and his constituents, acted immediately. That year, he, along with Congressman David Dreier (R-CA) introduced The Independent Film and Television Act of 2001. That bill gathered numerous co-sponsors and both Congressmen reintroduced it in 2003. Throughout those years, Congressmen Berman and Dreier were steadfast in their commitment and determined to secure passage. They achieved success when it was incorporated as what became Section 181 in the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004. With the introduction yesterday of their legislation to extend Section 181, Congressmen Berman and Dreier have reaffi rmed their support for one of America’s signature creative industries and the men and women who work in it. On behalf of its 15,000 members, the Directors Guild of America thanks Congressmen Berman and Dreier and greatly values their work with us on this problem for over a decade.”

JULY 2012 I 5 DGA Signatory Companies: What Members Need to Know It sounded like a great gig: directing an independent feature fi lm with a fi ve week shoot on location in Budapest, Hungary. But after prepping the picture, a long fl ight and several six-day weeks of 16-hour shooting days, the production ran out of money and shut down. Worse yet, the director got an urgent email from her agent saying her invoice had not been paid, no pension and health contributions had been made and no one was responding to his emails. A member can easily check the signatory status of a prospective employer by contacting the DGA Signatories Department at 310-289-5362. Note that just because the company was signatory on a prior project does not necessarily mean it is signatory on the current project. Some companies are signed to term agreements, under which every project they produce during that term is covered, while others are signatory to single project agreements, which requires them to complete a separate signatory application process for each new project. The signatory application should be submitted at least four weeks before the start of principal photography. That will give the DGA Signatories Department suffi cient time to obtain, review and analyze all the required project documentation and ensure that fi nancial assurances on each new signatory project are in place to protect Guild members’ interests throughout the life of the project, including initial compensation, pension and health contributions, and residuals.

Becoming a signatory company is free; the application form and information can be found on the DGA website. A brief overview of the process is as follows: 1. A signatory application may be downloaded from the Employers section of the DGA website (www.dga.org) or obtained via email from the Assistant Signatories Representative. 2. The completed signatory application is submitted to the DGA Signatories Department. The fastest way to submit it is via email to [email protected]. The signatory application is reviewed and the project assigned to a Signatories Representative (“Sig Rep”). The Sig Rep is responsible for sending out and obtaining certain documents, including a Letter of Adherence that binds the signatory company to the DGA agreement, payroll deposits to ensure the director and directorial team members are paid initial compensation and that pension and health contributions are made on their behalf, and fi nancial assurances documents to secure these payments and future residuals payments. 3. After all the required documents are received by the Sig Rep, the project is “cleared” to start principal photography. If you work for an employer that fails to become a DGA signatory, you may be brought up on disciplinary charges under the DGA Constitution and Bylaws, which could subject you to a fi ne or other disciplinary consequences imposed by your category Council.

The Latino Committee welcomed members to the Guild’s Los Angeles Theater for a special Q&A following the May 21 membership screening of Director Patricia Riggen’s new feature, Girl in Progress. Riggen’s comedic drama tells the story of a busy single mom, Grace (), who juggles work, bills, and her affair with a married doctor, while her young daughter, Ansiedad (Cierra Ramirez), is also busy plotting a “shortcut to adulthood” in a plan to skip adolescence and jump-start her life without her mom after fi nding inspiration in the coming-of-age stories she’s reading for school. After the screening, Riggen was joined onstage by Latino Committee Co-Chair/Director A.P. Gonzalez (Hurricane Party), who served as moderator of a Q&A about her work and the making of the fi lm. Riggen’s other credits include the 2011 movie for television Lemonade Mouth, the “Lindo y querido” segment from the 2010 anthology fi lm Revolución, and the 2007 feature Under the Same Moon (La misma luna). A DGA Women’s Steering Committee Event: WSC Hosts A Mixer for the Director’s Team

On June 7, the Women’s Steering Committee (WSC) invited Assistant Directors, Associate Directors, Stage Managers and Production Associates to an evening of networking and conversation at DGA Headquarters in Los Angeles during their 2012 mixer for director’s team members. Titled Building a Bridge for the Future, the mixer provided an opportunity for these Guild members to make connections and establish the beginnings of constructive relationships with a group of nearly thirty invited producers, Unit Production Managers, and production executives with hiring authority. After an informal reception and introductions, the participating VIPs had a chance to get acquainted with the members in one- on-one sessions. Each VIP participant was also presented with a resume booklet of all the DGA participants.

JULY 2012 I 17 A DGA Independent Directors Outreach Event: DGA Welcomes the 28th Annual LA Asian Pacifi c Film Fest

From May 10 - 20, Visual Communications presented a program of feature fi lms, shorts and videos during the 28th Annual Los Angeles Asian Pacifi c Film Festival (LAAPFF). Presented by Visual Communications, LAAPFF is Southern California’s premier showcase for Asian Pacifi c cinema. Since 1983, the Festival has presented more than 3,000 fi lms and videos by Asian international and Asian American artists, and additionally features seminars and panels, in- person guest appearances, and fi lmmaker awards. This year’s LAAPFF screened fi lms at various venues such as the DGA and the Aratani/Japan America Theatre. The LAAPFF is also a highlight of the month-long Asian Pacifi c Heritage Month activities. As part of its continuing outreach to independent directors on May 11 the Guild hosted a brunch for LAAPFF fi lmmakers where DGA Asian American Committee Co-Chair Chris Tashima spoke to the participants about the ever-changing workplace and the advantages of DGA membership, and DGA Independent Directors Committee member Mary Lambert was on hand to answer questions about the Guild.

A Central Casting and the Directors Guild-Producer Training Plan Seminar: DGA Members Attend AFTRA Contract Discussion

On June 2, DGA members joined casting professionals from Central Casting and Assistant Directors Training Program Trainees for an AFTRA Contracts Breakfast held at the Directors Guild-Producer Training Plan offi ces in Sherman Oaks, California. Presented by Central Casting and hosted by the Directors Guild-Producer Training Plan, this seminar featured an in-depth exploration of the three prevailing AFTRA TV background contracts. Central Casting’s Vice President Franklyn Warren, SAG- AFTRA’s Los Angeles Director of Entertainment Television David Besbris, and SAG-AFTRA’s Director of Production Services Terri Becherer explained the basics of the contracts and how DGA members and casting professionals can make the best use of them. Although SAG and AFTRA have recently merged, the seminar focused specifi cally on the current AFTRA contracts, which are still in effect. After a detailed discussion of the contracts, the participants learned the answers to questions they may face on the job and were able to submit their own questions that the panel answered at the end of the session.

Unit Production Manager members gathered on May 12 at DGA headquarters during the Western AD/UPM Council’s UPM Committee Brunch. This year’s event, “Strangers in a Strange Land: Taking Your Show on the Road,” featured an emphasis on feature fi lm shoots on location, a forum for members to discuss their thoughts about how to achieve the challenges beyond the confi nes of a studio shoot. After opening comments from Western AD/UPM Council Chair Marie Cantin, UPM Committee Co-Chairs Dwight Williams and Richard Prince welcomed a panel of esteemed UPM/Producers with expert knowledge: Michael Fottrell (RIPD), Bill Johnson (Contraband), Tony Mark (The Hurt Locker), and Louise Rosner (The Hunger Games). In a conversation moderated by UPM Herb Gains (Green Lantern), the panel covered a number of questions related to the challenges of shooting on location. In order to explore the day’s subject from a variety of viewpoints and angles, the attendees separated into smaller discussion groups moderated by members of the Committee. The fi ndings from each group’s explorations were later reported when everyone reconvened in the boardroom to share the key discussion points in an open session. A DGA African American Steering Committee Event: A Conversation with Director Tim Story

The African American Steering Committee (AASC) hosted a conversation with Director Tim Story following their regular monthly meeting in the Los Angeles Boardroom on June 5. Story was on hand to discuss the making of his latest feature fi lm Think Like A Man. The war-between-the-sexes comedy follows the misadventures of several couples whose lives take a turn when the women start taking relationship advice from a self-help manual and the men attempt to retaliate. Story sat down with Director John Singleton (Abduction) who served as moderator of the conversation. After screening clips and discussing the fi lm and his career, Story answered audience questions about production techniques, the ensemble cast, shooting on location, and the marketing strategy that took Think Like A Man to the top spot of the box offi ce upon its release. Story’s fi lmography includes the feature fi lms Barbershop (2002), Fantastic Four (2005), Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), and episodes of television series such as CSI: Miami. The event, Successful Writer/Director Relationships in Television, sought to provide guidance on how directors and writers can effectively collaborate. The panel consisted of Director Lesli Linka Glatter, whose credits include episodes of and Pretty Little Liars; Director Rosemary Rodriguez and Writer Michelle King, who work together on ; and Director Gwyneth Horder-Payton and Writers Nicole Yorkin and Dawn Prestwich, who work together on The Killing. Director Angela Robinson (True Blood, Hung) served as the moderator of a conversation that covered topics such as the importance of setting the tone for a series with the , what writer/producers look for in directors, and the needs and expectations of both writers and directors in episodic television.
