Purpose

The National Certificate in Museum Practice (Level 4) [Ref: 1221] recognises the essential skills and knowledge required to work in all sectors within a museum. It is intended for people training for a career, or currently employed or volunteering at an introductory to intermediate level, in a museum in New Zealand.

This qualification may also be used by qualified museum professionals working in specialist areas within a museum to ensure they have broad knowledge of the practice of a particular museum.

The qualification comprises a compulsory and two elective sections. The standards in the Compulsory section cover essential skills and knowledge related to museum collection maintenance; Māori in museums; the purposes, functions, and responsibilities of museums in Aotearoa New Zealand; and scoping and proposing a public museum programme.

In Elective 1, candidates can choose between two standards that cover skills and knowledge related to hosting museum visitors or security required in museums.

In Elective 2, candidates can choose standards from the Museum Services domain or other standards relevant to the different roles within the museum sector from the Art History, Pānui, Wāhi Tapu, and Visitor Interpretation domains.

This qualification builds on the National Certificate in Tourism and Travel (Core Skills) (Level 3) [Ref: 0876].
