The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) program uses a primary health care focus to prepare students for advanced practice in psychiatric mental health nursing. The students will be prepared to practice in various settings including community setting, private practice, institutional settings, substance abuse settings, and shelters. All courses specific to the PMHNP major will be taught on the Pleasantville Campus. Clinical specialty cohort sequencing begins every fall of even years (2006, 2008, etc.)

The program provides health promotion, disease prevention, assessment, and treatment of psychiatric diseases and disorders affecting adults. Strategies used will include but are not limited to treatment, medication management, case management, individual, family and group therapy. Advanced PMHNP includes the recognition of neuropsychiatry’s interplay in the management of psychiatric illnesses. Preparation for PMHNP includes advanced health evaluation techniques, pathophysiology, pharmacotherapeutics, and prescriptive authority which distinguish the PMHNP from the Psychiatric CNS role.

Graduation from the program provides eligibility for licensure in New York State as PMHNP as well as eligibility to take the national certification examination.
