Treaty Rights: the Ojibwa and the United States

Les Dokkestul Black River Falls Middle School Grade 7

Brief Introduction by Oscar Chamberlain

This plan was designed by Mr. Dokkestul for a 7th grade class to look at treaties between the Ojibwa and the United States. He begins by providing background on Ojibwa/European relations, starting with the fur trade in the 1600s and 1700s. He continues into the 19th century and concludes with the treaties at the middle of the century that set the legal structure for the relations. He includes role-playing exercise and other teaching strategies as part of the accompanying PowerPoint. The Overview provides additional information.
