The Barnard Cup and the Times Trophy

The Barnard Cup and the Times Cup (Adjusted at January, 2009)

The following tables record the totality of winners of the above two trophies – the Barnard Cup for Vancouver Island Senior Champion – and the Times Cup for second sides in Senior Men’s play within the VIRU.

The source for these data are principally: Lew Madley’s “James Bay Athletic Association - First 100 Years 1886-1986, information from Doug Sturrock, Mr. Madley’s “Rugby Football in British Columbia, 1876-1989 – and actual inscriptions on the two trophies.

It will be observed that these records are somewhat incomplete particularly for the Times Cup. It may be that others have access to written sources that might fill in remaining blanks.

My sense is that that the Barnard and Times trophies represent an important part of the rich rugby history of our Island – and that we need to try and capture what we can in one place before it drifts away. I welcome any further information that might fill in some of the blanks.
