Flamenco Rosario’s Artistic Director, Rosario Ancer and Musical Director, Victor Kolstee take great pride that throughout the past 18 years of their Flamenco Festival, they have continuously presented and brought in countless renowned national and international flamenco guest artists of the highest caliber to perform in Vancouver. For this year’s Vancouver Flamenco Festival, Rosario and Victor will once again deliver! At the Playhouse Theatre on September 29th, they will be joined on stage by guest artists Dancer/Choreographer Adriana Maresma and Guitarist Juan Antonio Gomez, both based in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. They have performed and toured with the finest Spanish flamenco masters, including acclaimed Singer Carmen Linares and Jerez de la Frontera favorite dancer Antonio El Pipa. Also on stage gipsy singer Manuel Tañe from Jerez de la Frontera Spain, who will be playing with them tonight.
The line-up this year also includes Canadian Dancer/Choreographer Keri Alba, from Saskatchewan, who will be performing “Tientos”. This talented woman also directs Alma Flamenca and the Flamenco Expo Festival. Fresh from a year of intensive training in Sevilla, Spain, company member Nanako Aramaki will make her debut as a Festival featured solo artist, performing a “Guajira” arranged by Nanako and choreographed by Spanish living legend “Milagros Menjibar”. Local favorite Afifa Lahbabi ‘La Mora” has choreographed her own piece for the Festival entitled “Alegrias”.
Other highlights of this evening promise to be an ensemble piece by Flamenco Rosario dancers: Alice Gerbrecht, Afifa Lahbabi, Nanako Aramaki and Veronica Stewart, choreographed by acclaimed Spanish choreographer Miguel Angel; a musical piece “Paseando”, arranged by Victor Kolstee; and Rosario Ancer’s signature dance “Solea”, which is the inspiration of her new creation work “Soledad en Compania” (Accompanied Solitude), a non-traditional experimental dance accompanied by saxophone, guitar and song.
For the first time ever, the Festival will present a second evening at The Jazz Cellar on September 30th, solely dedicated to Flamenco Music (La Musica Del Flamenco) featuring guitar and song. The Flamenco Juerga (“party or jam”) will showcase the musical talents and impromptu playing of guitarists Victor Kolstee and Spain’s Juan Antonio Gomez along with Spanish Gipsy singer Manuel Tañe. The spontaneity of the evening will be exciting and leave audiences wanting more!
