Using MovieMaker for Digital Storytelling Note: You need to edit your photographs first then import them into MovieMaker where you can create your digital story. You cannot crop or reduce red-eye in MovieMaker. You can add some effects (colour/aged) to your images in MovieMaker.
The Workspace:
Import Photos: In the tasks pane, under Import, click on Pictures. Locate your pictures on your computer and import them. Creating your storyboard: Drag and drop your imported photos onto the storyboard at the bottom. To Add a Title: Titles can be added before or after a clip on a “blank” coloured background or over top of a video clip or picture. 1. Click where you want the title on the storyboard/timeline. 2. Click Tools, and then click Titles and Credits or click on Titles and Credits on the tasks pane. 3. Choose where you want the title and click on that link. 4. In the Enter text for title box, type the text that you want to appear as the title or credit. After you type the text, the monitor displays the default animation and format for the title or credit you want to add. 5. To change the title animation, click Change the title animation, and select a title animation from the list. 6. To change the font and color for your title, click Change the text font and color, and then choose the font, font color, formatting, background color, transparency, font size, and position of the title to your liking. 7. Click Add Title.
8. A “stand-alone” title appears in the storyboard view and timeline view. A title over video or picture appears in the timeline view underneath the clip or picture. To Add Transitions Between Video Clips and Pictures: 1. In either the Storyboard or timeline view, Click on Transitions in the tasks pane or Tools then Transitions. 2. Double click on the transition to preview it. 3. Select the transition you want to use and click and drag it between the clips.
Digital Video & Animation 1 4. In the storyboard view the transition appears between the clips. 5. In the timeline view the transition appears under the clips.
To Add Effects to your Videos and Pictures: 1. Select the clip or picture in either the storyboard or timeline view. 2. Click on Effects in the task pane or Tools then Effects. 3. Double click on the effect to preview it. Select the effect you want to use. 4. Click and drag the effect onto your clip or picture. A star appears to show that the effect has been added. Note: The more times you add an effect to the same clip, the stronger the effect.
To add Narration (Voice Over): Note: You will need a microphone—either a built in microphone or an external microphone. 1. Click on Tools then Narrate Timeline or click on Timeline then Narrate Timeline. 2. You will see a window like this:
3. Drag the play head to where you want to start recording. 4. Click on Start Narration and begin speaking. 5. Click on Stop Narration when finished speaking. 6. A save window appears. Give the audio recording a name and save. 7. Your audio then appears in the audio track under the video clips. 8. The narration is also saved in your imported media (defaults to a New Folder in the imported media).
To Add Other Audio Such as Music and Sound Effects: 1. Decide which audio files to use. You can listen to the sample music and sound effect in the folder called Music and Sound Effects. This is saved onto your desktop for today`s session. 2. Import the required audio files (music and sound effects). ImportAudio or Music 3. Your audio file(s) appears in the collections pane. 4. In timeline View, click and drag the audio file to where you want it. 5. To adjust the volume of the audio, select the clip then audio and select volume or one of the other options.
To Publish Your Project: This saves your project as a video file. You can choose different formats and file sizes. 1. From the tasks pane, Select Publish to This Computer. 2. Give it a name and choose the location. Select Next. 3. Select the format—Best playback for my computer. Then click on Publish. This may take a few minutes. Your project will be published to a video file (wmv).
Creating Stop-Motion Animation using MovieMaker: To create an animation using a Digital Camera and Movie Maker: Part 1: Filming: Take pictures of your models-moving a small amount after each picture. Part 2: Editing: Import your photos onto your computer as normal. Open MovieMaker. Tools Menu>Options>Advanced Tab>Change picture duration to 0.125s and the picture transition to 0.25.
Digital Video & Animation 2 Import all your animation photos into MovieMaker. Select all your photos and drag to your timeline. Add titles and/or voice-over and sound track and publish your movie.
