I began my tenure here in Madison with EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Mahler’s first symphony, and performed the eighth as a triumphal closing Marni McEntee celebration of our first season in Overture Hall. Mahler didn’t compose [email protected] any operas, but his symphonies are often operatic in scope, and indeed ASSISTANT EDITOR this eighth symphony has tempted some to call it his opera. It was Julia Richards Leonard Bernstein’s passionate embrace of Mahler that introduced this [email protected] composer to me. I felt immediately that Mahler embraced so totally man’s earthly experience and his struggle for salvation.
