THOMAS MOSS OF 12 ORANGEBURG COUNTY FOR HIS OUTSTANDING 13 CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS CAREER, COMMUNITY, AND 14 COUNTRY AND TO RECOGNIZE HIS IMPORTANT 15 ENDEAVORS. 16 17 Whereas, the South Carolina Senate takes great pride in 18 recognizing those South Carolinians who give tirelessly of 19 themselves in furtherance of their individual communities and this 20 great State; and 21 22 Whereas, the late Dr. Thomas Moss was certainly one such 23 individual, as his life stands as a testament to all the good that 24 comes from the hard work, integrity, and diligence of one man; 25 and 26 27 Whereas, Dr. Moss was the son of the late Willie and Rosana Moss 28 and was a native of the Four Holes Community. There, he 29 attended Orangeburg County public schools and later attended 30 Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina, before he was drafted 31 into the United States Army to serve in the Korean War; and 32 33 Whereas, the loving husband of Gladys Moss, a retired educator, 34 Dr. Moss was the proud father of two children, Thomasina and 35 Andre; and 36 37 Whereas, Dr. Moss served the citizens of this State for a number of 38 years as field representative for the South Carolina Office of U.S. 39 Senior Senator, the late Strom Thurmond; and 40 41 Whereas, dedicating his life to education and civil rights 42 advancement, Dr. Moss received countless honors for his
1 [1139] 1 1 commitment to social causes in South Carolina. He received the 2 Freedom Fighter Award from the Orangeburg branch of the 3 NAACP, the United States Senate Loyal Service Award, and the 4 Order of Palmetto Award, among many others; and 5 6 Whereas, Dr. Moss helped to meet the needs of the people through 7 community, state, and national involvement, including an 8 affiliation with the Orangeburg/Bowman branch of the NAACP, 9 the Orangeburg Bi-Racial Committee, the Orangeburg-Calhoun 10 counties Area Committee for Economic Progress, and the 11 Advisory Committee of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission; and 12 13 Whereas, Dr. Moss’ legacy will live on in years to come, through 14 the Thomas Moss Civic Leadership Award established in his 15 name; and 16 17 Whereas, a dedicated member of the Andrew Chapel Baptist 18 Church in Orangeburg County, Dr. Moss served as Chairman of 19 the Deacon’s Ministry; and 20 21 Whereas, the Senate lauds the memory of Dr. Moss for his 22 enduring love and commitment to the betterment of the 23 Orangeburg community. Now, therefore, 24 25 Be it resolved by the Senate: 26 27 That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by 28 this resolution, honor the late Dr. Thomas Moss of Orangeburg 29 County for his outstanding contributions to his career, community, 30 and country and recognize his important endeavors. 31 32 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 33 the family of the late Dr. Thomas Moss. 34 ----XX---- 35
