RESEARCH OFFICER (PART-TIME) ASAP PROGRAMME: MAYOSI RESEARCH GROUP DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for appointment to a part-time (25 hours per week) 4-year contract position commencing 1 December 2012.

The Awareness, Surveillance, Advocacy and Prevention (ASAP) programme with the Mayosi Research Group in the Department of Medicine aims to raise awareness of the public and healthcare workers about Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) / Rheumatic Fever (RF). It also strives to improve the quality of information that is available on the incidence, prevalence and burden of RF/RHD through epidemiological surveillance, and work towards the establishment of national primary and secondary prevention programmes of RHD. Consequently, the programme requires a part-time Research Officer to manage echocardiography-related research activities.

Requirements:  A Master’s degree in Medicine or M.Tech graduate Clin Tech (Cardiology)  A minimum of five years’ experience in performing and reporting of echocardiograms  Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).  A special interest in research with the desire to improve the quality of healthcare and make progress in understanding diseases.  Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and current accredited GCP certificate

Responsibilities:  Design of research questions and conduct small echocardiography projects under the supervision and with the approval of the principal investigator(s).  Writing and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the performing, reporting and archiving of echocardiograms for research projects.  Overseeing echocardiography- related activities  Training echo-cardiographers according to the SOPs  Quality control (upkeep of SOP specifications)  Provide echocardiography training to registered trainees as part of a training committee, or independently  Maintenance of accurate echocardiography data  Establish the variance of measurements and observers  Maintain effective communication with the project manager(s), the projects coordinator(s) and the echo-cardiographers

The annual remuneration package for this part-time position, commensurate with qualifications and experience is R267 069 (equivalent to Lecturer level).
