The People's Lawyer: President Obama Nominates Loretta Lynch to Be the Next Attorney General By Tanya Somanader

"The Department of Justice is the only Cabinet Department named for an ideal. And this is actually appropriate," U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch said. "Because our work is both aspirational, and grounded in gritty reality." President Obama nominated U.S. Attorney Lynch, to replace Eric Holder as the next Attorney General of the United States, or "the people's lawyer." As the President said: The person in this position is responsible for enforcing our federal laws, including protecting our civil rights. Working with the remarkable men and women of the Justice Department, the Attorney General oversees the vast portfolio of cases, including counterterrorism and voting rights; public corruption and white-collar crime; judicial recommendations and policy reviews -- all of which impact on the lives of every American, and shape the life of our nation.

As one of the longest-serving Attorney Generals in our history, Eric Holder fulfilled these duties with a commitment to justice, not as an abstract theory but as a principle. Justice is "about how laws interact with the daily lives of our people," the President said. "Whether we can make an honest living, whether we can provide for our families; whether we feel safe in our own communities and welcome in our own country; whether the words that the founders set to paper 238 years ago apply to every one of us in our time." Soldiers Betraying Soldiers Katie Kieffer | Nov 10, 2014

Secret stories of soldiers stabbing their fellow soldiers in the back read like crime thrillers. Our bravest soldiers and veterans are increasingly the victims of abuse by other soldiers with more political clout. President Obama boasts of his ability to “evolve” on gay marriage. He has also evolved on other issues, such as his level of respect for the military. That is, if regression is a form of evolution. Air Force Times recently published a story headlined “When Generals Behave Badly,” detailing an epidemic of corruption among the military’s top brass. Obama is doing little to discipline his generals found guilty of fraud, reprisal and abuse of authority. Slaps on the wrist like verbal counseling and letters of reprimand are routine. Veteran’s Day is tomorrow and it is a fitting time to shine light on how the executive branch has turned the military into a massive bureaucracy—while our veterans are caught in the crosshairs. Did the Mid-Terms Really Mean That Much? By Ron Paul

Did the election last week really mean that much? I took to my Twitter account on Tuesday to point out that the change in control of the Senate from Democrat to Republican actually means very little, despite efforts by politicians and the mainstream media to convince us otherwise. Yes, power shifted, I wrote. But the philosophy on Capitol Hill changed very little. The warfare/welfare state is still alive and well in Washington. Some were critical of my comment that, "Republican control of the Senate equals expanded neo-con wars in Syria and Iraq. Boots on the ground are coming!" But unfortunately my fears were confirmed even sooner than I thought. Shortly after the vote, President Obama announced that he would double the number of US troops on the ground in Iraq and request another $5.6 billion to fight his war in the Middle East.

5 Here’s How Conservatives Aim to Stop Obama’s Action on Illegal Immigrants By Josh Siegel

Aides to conservative members of the U.S. Senate say their bosses are rallying around a strategy to prevent President Obama from taking executive action to move illegal immigrants toward citizenship: Use government funding bills to withhold the money the president needs to implement his plan. At the same time, some of the Senate’s most conservative members are worried that party leadership could try to strike a deal with Democrats in the lame duck session on a longer-term spending agreement that could limit lawmakers’ ability to defund whatever Obama decides to do. In a series of interviews with The Daily Signal, conservative Senate staffers said their lawmakers firmly oppose Obama’s acting on his own to allow millions of illegal immigrants to stay in the country. However, they are open to supporting a piecemeal approach on immigration policy that would emphasize border security first. The results of this week’s election — where Republicans took control of the Senate and picked up seats in the House with a platform opposed to unilateral immigration action by the president — only emboldened their will to fight it, the Senate staffers said.

6 Gay Marriage Ruling Pressures Supreme Court By Jess Bravin and Brent Kendall

A federal appeals court in Cincinnati upheld bans on same-sex marriage in four states Thursday, creating a conflict in the courts that puts renewed pressure on the Supreme Court to decide whether gay couples have a constitutional right to wed. The 2-1 ruling, from a panel of the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, breaks with other courts that recently struck down state bans on gay unions. Until Thursday no federal appeals court had upheld a law barring same-sex marriage, following the Supreme Court’s June 2013 ruling in U.S. v. Windsor striking down the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act’s denial of federal benefits for same-sex married couples. The high court in October passed up the chance to review several rulings invalidating marriage bans in a number of states, in part, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has said, because there was no conflict in the lower courts to resolve. Disagreement between federal appeals courts is a main reason the Supreme Court steps in to resolve a legal issue. Thursday’s ruling allows Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee to continue enforcing constitutional bans on same-sex marriage.

7 Blacks Must Embrace Freedom, Learn, and Progress By Star Parker

I am a conservative. I believe in the truth of traditional values, of limited government, and free markets. And I believe in personal freedom and that it is not possible without all the above. Our country has been going in the opposite direction and things, predictably, have not been going well. The American people spoke last Tuesday, and I am happy with what they had to say. But I am also happy that we have, once again, proof that America is still a free country. That when the American people are not happy, they can vote for change. This is a great thing. But best is when we use this precious gift of freedom to learn and to grow. Freedom means making inevitable mistakes, learning from them, changing and improving. This points to two watershed events of this election. Election of the first black Republican woman to the US House of Representatives, Mia Love of Utah, and the first black Senator from the South elected since reconstruction, Tim Scott of South Carolina.
